Ignition Timing: Adjustments





1. Connect a timing light to engine and disconnect and plug the vacuum hose to the distributor (3A-C only) as shown.
2. Start the engine and let it idle. Idle should be no more than 900 rpm for the Canadian Wagon 4WD and 950 rpm for all others, adjust as necessary.





3. On both engines, slowly turn the distributor until the timing mark indicates 5° BTDC.
4. Tighten the lockdown bolt and ensure that timing is still within spec.
Torque to 13 Nm (9 ft.lbs).
5. On the 3A-C engine only, you can further check ignition timing as follows.





6. Reconnect the vacuum hose to the distributor.
7. Check that timing advances.

Ignition Timing
4-speed M/T: About 13° @ 550 rpm
5-speed M/T w/o PS: About 13° @ 650 rpm
A/T w/o PS: About 13° @ 800 rpm
5-speed M/T w/ PS: About 13° @ 800 rpm
A/T w/ PS: About 13° @ 900 rpm
