JUNE 26, 1987

TO: ALL TOYOTA DEALERS AND SERVICE MANAGERS

SUBJECT: SPECIAL SERVICE CAMPAIGN - H03 1983 - 1986 TERCEL, COROLLA 1983-1/2 - 1985 CAMRY 1984 - 1985 VAN

Toyota will conduct a Special Service Campaign on the above mentioned models to inspect, and if necessary, replace the igniter assembly.

The owner notification letters will be mailed in late July through August 1987. However, if a owner experiences igniter problems prior to the notification, please proceed to complete the repair according to this service campaign.

1. Vehicles Involved
2. Inspection/Replacement Procedures

Please refer to the attached technical instructions for details of the inspection/replacement procedures.

3. Parts Ordering

As with previous campaigns, the necessary parts must be ordered from your facing Parts Distribution Center. The parts required for this campaign include:

Vehicle Model Part Name Part Number Quantity

Camry, Van Igniter Sub-Assembly 89620-14210-68 1
Tercel, Corolla Igniter Sub-Assembly 89620-16080-68 1

Note: Check that the replacement igniter is marked with a short black or green mark as indicated in the attached technical instructions.

In order to eliminate over ordering or excessive parts inventory, it is recommended that the initial parts order does not exceed 10% of the number of vehicles on the owner list for your dealership which will be forwarded to you prior to owner notificaton. If you are a new dealership or a recent buy/sell, you may not receive a VIN list. In this case, it is recommended that parts are ordered based on owner response.

4. Completion Label

Following installation of the igniter, a SSC completion label must be affixed to the left front door post near the door hinge on the Van and on the firewall for the Tercel, Corolla and Camry models. Additional SSC completion labels may be ordered through the non-parts system on a 1450 order form or through the TDN sytem.

Part Name (Non-Parts) Part Number Quantity

Campaign Completion 00410-01917 # of sheet
Label 50 labels/sheet)

Toyota will reimburse the dealer in full for the customer reimbursement plus the subsequent inspection or replacement on one claim as follows:
*NOTE: As communicated in Warranty Bulletin No. 87-21, dated 5/15/87, 0.1 hour administrative time for SSC preparation, customer reimbursement and follow up, etc. are included in the above operation codes. Dear Toyota Owner:

Toyota will initiate a service campaign to inspect the ignition control module on certain 1983 to 1986 model year Tercel, Corolla, Camry and Vans that may encounter an ignition control module malfunction.

This inspection is to determine if the ignition system on your vehicle is part of a suspected group and if it is, replace the ignition control module. This ignition control module provides the on/off switching of electrical energy to the spark plugs which may malfunction on some vehicles and cause the engine to fail to start or it may stop running. We want to assure your continued satisfaction and to prevent this problem from occurring on your vehicle, we urgently request that you call your dealer to arrange for an inspection of your vehicle. Toyota will inspect and, if necessary, replace the ignition control module at no cost to you. Approximately 30 minutes on the Tercel, Corolla and Camry and 80 minutes on the Van will be required for this inspection and/or replacement of the ignition control module, but additional time may be necessary depending on your dealer's schedule.

Your Toyota dealer is equipped with all of the tools and trained technicians to conduct this campaign quickly and accurately. If, however, you feel that the dealer has failed to remedy the defect within a reasonable time, please contact our National Customer Relations department at 1-800-331-4331 in the continental United States or the nearest Toyota distributor office listed on the back of this letter. If you have had this ignition control module replaced, and paid for the ignition control module's replacement, simply present evidence of such expenses to your Toyota dealer for reimbursement consideration.

Our records indicate that you own one of the subject vehicles. However, if you no longer own the vehicle, please complete the enclosed postage paid card providing us with the name and address of the new owner.

We regret any inconvenience this matter may cause you, and we thank you for driving a Toyota.
