IV. Igniter Replacement Procedure

(A) Igniter Removal

1. Remove rotor, ignition coil cover and igniter cover.



2. Disconnect the red and brown wires from the (+) ignition coil terminal.
3. Disconnect the yellow and blue wires from the (-) ignition coil terminal.


4. Disconnect the pink and white wires from the igniter unit.



5. Remove the two igniter retaining screws and lift the igniter out of the distributor housing.


6. Discard the retaining screws.



7. Disconnect the black wire from the igniter.
8. Remove the igniter.



(B) Igniter Replacement


1. Attach black wire to igniter.

2. Install new igniter using two new retaining screws.

Separate Nut Terminal:




Welded Nut Terminal:




3. Install the pick-up coil (signal generator) lead wire as indicated below.


NOTE: There are two types of terminals on pick-up coil lead wires.


4. Insert pink and white wires into illustrated clamp.
5. Check that the wires do not contact the rotor, distributor housing or advance plate.



6. Route red and yellow wires from the igniter so that it will not contact any moving parts.
7. Connect brown wire, then red wire to the (+) ignition coil terminal.


8. Connect yellow wire, then blue wire to the (-) ignition coil terminal.



9. Check that wires are routed properly into the grooves as illustrated.



10. Install igniter cover, coil cover, rotor and distributor cap.


11. Connect green wire connector to the distributor assembly.
12. Close the No. 2 engine cover and fold the center floor carpet down.

NOTE: Hand tighten the set bolts first starting at the console assembly; tighten.



13. Install the two clamps as illustrated, then attach the accelerator cable.


NOTE: Install clamp B first.
14. Connect parking brake switch wire, for A/T connect indicator lamp wire and transmission relay.


15. Install console box assembly.


M/T: Install the shift lever knob.



16. Close the No. 2 engine cover and fold carpet down.


17. Install inner seat belt and torque to 32 ft-lb.

18. Install front passenger seat assembly and torque to 28 ft-lb.
