IV.Igniter Removal and Replacement Procedure
1) When starting removal of the igniter unit, disconnect the green wire connector from the distributor assembly.2) Disconnect the resistive cord from the spark plugs.
CAUTION: * Check that the ignition key is in the OFF position.
* Do not drop screws and nuts in the distributor.
* Do not pull excessively on any wires or connectors.
(A) Igniter Removal
1. Identify position of pink and white wire from pick-up coil. (Signal generator).
2. Disconnect red and brown wires from the right ignition coil (+) terminal, and yellow and blue wires from the left ignition coil (-) terminal.
3. Disconnect pink, white and black wires from igniter unit.
4. Remove and discard the two retaining screws and lift out the igniter unit.
(B) Igniter Replacement
1. Install new igniter using the two new retaining screws.
2. Install the pick-up coil (signal generator) lead wire as indicated below:
NOTE: Two different types of end terminals on pick-up coil lead wires.
(Type A) Nut Type Terminal:
(Type B) Welded Nut Type Terminal:
* Insert pink and white wires into clamp as illustrated.
* Make sure that the wires do not contact the signal rotor, distributor housing or advance plate.
3. Install black wire to its original location on the igniter terminal.
4. Route red and yellow wires from igniter so that contact is not made to any moving parts. Connect red wire and brown wires to the right ignition coil (+) terminal. Connect the yellow wire to the right ignition coil (-) terminal with the blue wire. When the red and brown wires are installed to the ignition coil (+) terminal, insert the wires properly into the grooves of the coil to avoid any contact with the rotor.
5. Install igniter cover, coil cover, rotor and distributor cap.
