Cylinder Head Installation
1. Place new head gaskets in position on the block. Place cylinder heads in position on the gaskets.
Cylinder Head Bolt Torque Sequence (1 Of 2):
2. Inspect head bolts, replace any that are broken or deformed.
3. In the sequence shown, torque the head bolts in several passes to 34 Nm (25 ft.lbs).
4. Mark the front of each cylinder head bolt with paint as shown.
5. In the same order as shown before, torque head bolts 90° then torque an additional 90°. Make sure the paint marks now point towards the rear.
6. Apply a light coat of engine oil on the threads and under the heads of the recessed head bolts. Using an 8mm hex wrench, install and torque to 18 Nm (13 ft.lbs).
7. Install the LH engine hanger and torque to 37 Nm (27 ft.lbs).
8. Apply multi-purpose grease to the thrust portion of the RH intake cam.
9. Place the RH intake cam at 90° angle of the timing mark on the cylinder head as shown.
Fig. 16 No. 1 Cam Cap Sealing Location:
10. Apply seal packing, part No. 08826-00080 or equivalent, to the No.1 bearing cap as shown.
11. Install the cam bearing caps in their proper locations as shown.
12. Apply a light coat of engine oil on the threads and under the heads of the cap bolts.
13. Install and evenly torque the cap bolts in several passes in the sequence shown. Torque to 16 Nm (12 ft.lbs).
14. Apply multi-purpose grease to the thrust portion of the RH exhaust cam.
15. Align the timing marks of the cam drive and driven gears as shown and carefully place the exhaust cam into position.
16. Install the bearing caps in their proper position as shown.
17. Apply a light coat of engine oil on the threads and under the heads of the cap bolts and install them.
18. Evenly torque the cap bolts in several passes in the sequence shown. Torque to 16 Nm (12 ft.lbs) and remove the service bolt.
19. Apply multi-purpose grease to the LH thrust portion of the intake cam.
20. Place the intake cam at 90° angle of timing mark on the cylinder head as shown.
Fig. 16 No. 1 Cam Cap Sealing Location:
21. Apply seal packing, part No. 08826-00080 or equivalent, to the No.1 bearing cap as shown.
22. Install the bearing caps in their proper locations as shown.
23. Apply a light coat of engine oil on the threads and under the heads of the cam bolts and install them.
24. Evenly torque the cap bolts in several passes in the sequence shown. Torque to 16 Nm (12 ft.lbs).
25. Apply multi-purpose grease to the thrust portion of the intake cam.
26. Line up the timing marks of the cam drive and driven gears as shown.
27. Place the cam on the cylinder head.
28. Install the bearing caps in their proper location as shown.
29. Apply a light coat of engine oil on the threads and under the heads of the cap bolts.
30. Install and evenly torque the cap bolts in several passes in the sequence shown. Torque to 16 Nm (12 ft.lbs).
31. Turn the cam and position a cam lobe upward, check and adjust the clearance of each valve.
Intake clearance (cold) should be 0.13 - 0.23mm (0.005 - 0.009 in) and exhaust (cold) 0.27 - 0.37mm (0.011 - 0.015 in).
32. Apply multi-purpose grease to the new oil seal as shown.
33. Using SST 09223-46011 or equivalent, tap the oil seals into place.
