Driveshaft, Intermediate Shaft & Universal Joint
Fig. 5 Driveshaft Assembly. 1989-91 Camry w/4 Cylinder Engine:
1. Raise and support vehicle, then remove engine undercover (if equipped).
2. Remove cotter pin and bearing locknut cap.
3. While depressing the brake pedal, loosen bearing locknut.
4. While depressing the brake pedal, loosen six nuts attaching front driveshaft to intermediate shaft or differential side gear shaft assembly if equipped, Fig. 5.
5. Remove brake caliper from steering knuckle and suspend unit with piece of wire.
6. Remove disc rotor and lefthand side transaxle case protector, if equipped.
7. Disconnect steering knuckle from lower arm as follows:
a. Remove two bolts attaching ball joint to steering knuckle.
b. Disconnect lower arm from steering knuckle.
8. On all models, using tool No. 09950-20014 or equivalent, pull axle hub from front driveshaft.
9. Remove driveshaft.
10. If Camry models is equipped with center shaft and removal is necessary, proceed as follows:
a. Drain transaxle fluid or differential oil into suitable container.
b. Remove center driveshaft locknut.
c. Remove snap ring from bearing bracket, then pull out center driveshaft.
11. Reverse procedure to install, torque bolts to specifications.
