On 3S-GE and 3S-GTE engines, valve adjustment is accomplished by installing the proper thickness shim to achieve proper valve clearance. Shims are available in .0020 inch (.050mm) increments, Figs. 11 and 12. Clearance on intake valves is .006-.010 inch and 1989-91 exhaust valves is .008-.012 inch and 1992 exhaust valves is .011-.015 inch cold.

1. Crank engine until No. 1 cylinder is at TDC compression stroke and adjust the following cylinders valves to specifications:
Intake Nos. 1, 2 Exhaust Nos. 1, 3
2. Rotate engine one complete revolution clockwise and adjust the following cylinders valves to specifications:
Intake Nos. 3, 4 Exhaust Nos. 2, 4
