Distributor: Service and Repair

REMOVAL:

Component Location:





1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.

CAUTION: Do not start work for approximately 20 seconds from the time the ignition switch is turned to the locked position and the negative battery terminal was disconnected.

2. Disconnect the distributor connector.

Coil Wire Removal:





3. Using a screwdriver, lift up the lock claw and disconnect the secondary ignition coil wire.

Spark Plug Removal And Installation:





4. Disconnect the secondary ignition wires from the spark plugs.

Distributor Hold Down Bolt:





5. Remove the distributor hold down bolt and remove distributor from cylinder head.

Distributor O-ring:





6. Remove and discard distributor O-ring.

INSTALLATION:

TDC Timing Mark:





1. Turn crankshaft clockwise and set #1 cylinder to TDC. Align notch in crankshaft pulley to TDC mark on timing belt cover. Ensure position of slit on intake camshaft.

Distributor O-ring:





2. Install a new O-ring to distributor and apply a light coat of engine oil to O-ring.

Distributor Alignment:





3. Align the cutout portion of the coupling with the groove of the housing.

4. Insert the distributor into cylinder head. Align the center of the flange with the bolt hole on the cylinder head. Lightly tighten the hold down bolt.

Coil Wire Installation:





5. Insert the grommet portion of the coil wire into the ignition coil.

Coil Wire Retainer Installation:





6. Align the spline of the ignition coil with the spline of the coil wire holder, connect the coil wire. Ensure the lock claw is properly positioned.

7. Connect the secondary ignition wires to the spark plugs. Ensure proper firing order.

Firing Order: 1 - 3 - 4 - 2

8. Reconnect the distributor connector.

9. Adjust ignition timing. Refer to ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURES.
