Starter Motor: Service and Repair

4A-FE ENGINE

1. Disable airbag system, refer to MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/AIRBAG ARMING & DISARMING.
2. Raise and support vehicle.
3. Remove lower suspension crossmember retaining bolts and nuts, then lower crossmember.
4. Remove air cleaner cap as follows:
a. Disconnect intake air temperature sensor connector.
b. Disconnect accelerator cable from bracket on air cleaner cap.
c. Disconnect four air cleaner cap clips, then air hose from air pipe.
d. Disconnect air cleaner hose from throttle body and remove air cleaner cap and filter element.
5. Remove two starter to transaxle retaining bolts.
6. Disconnect starter electrical connector, starter wire and remove starter.
7. Reverse procedure to install, torque starter retaining bolts to 29 ft. lbs.
8. Rearm airbag system, refer to MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/AIRBAG ARMING & DISARMING.

5S-FE ENGINE

1. Disable airbag system, refer to MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/AIRBAG ARMING & DISARMING.
2. Remove air cleaner case assembly as follows:
a. Disconnect air intake temperature sensor connector.
b. Disconnect four air cleaner cap clips.
c. Disconnect air cleaner hose from throttle body and remove air cleaner cap and filter element.
d. Remove three air cleaner case retaining bolts, then the case.
3. Remove engine compartment relay box as follows:
a. Remove two relay box retaining nuts and disconnect relay box from the battery.
b. Remove lower cover from relay box.
c. Disconnect fusible link cassette and two connectors of the engine wire from relay box.
4. On models with cruise control and anti-lock brakes, disconnect cruise control actuator connector, then remove four actuator retaining bolts and remove actuator.
5. On all models, disconnect starter electrical connector and starter wire.
6. Remove two starter retaining bolts, then the starter.
7. Reverse procedure to install, torque starter retaining bolts to 29 ft. lbs.
8. Rearm airbag system, refer to MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/AIRBAG ARMING & DISARMING.
