Engine: Service and Repair

1. Disable airbag system, refer to MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/AIRBAG ARMING & DISARMING.
2. Remove hood and engine undercover.
3. Drain engine coolant, then engine oil.
4. Remove air cleaner assembly as follows:
a. Disconnect intake air temperature sensor electrical connector.
b. Disconnect accelerator cable from bracket on air cleaner cap.
c. Disconnect four air cleaner cap clips, then air hose from air pipe.
d. Disconnect air cleaner hose from throttle body, then remove air cleaner cap and element.
e. Remove three air cleaner case retaining bolts, then the case.
5. Disconnect accelerator cable from throttle body.
6. Remove two engine relay box retaining nuts and disconnect relay box from battery.
7. Remove lower cover from relay box, then disconnect fusible link cassette and two connectors of engine wire from relay box.
8. Remove A/C relay box from bracket, then the battery.
9. On models with cruise control and anti-lock brake system (ABS), disconnect cruise control actuator electrical connector, remove four actuator attaching bolts, actuator and bracket.
10. On models with cruise control less anti-lock brake system (ABS), proceed as follows:
a. Remove cruise control actuator cover, then disconnect vacuum hose from air intake chamber.
b. Disconnect actuator connector, then cable from actuator.
c. Remove three actuator attaching bolts and actuator.
11. On all models, disconnect electric cooling fan connector, then remove upper radiator support seal.
12. Disconnect coolant reservoir hose, then remaining radiator hoses.
13. On models with automatic transmission, disconnect oil cooler hoses from the radiator.
14. On all models, remove two radiator upper support retaining bolts.
15. Lift radiator out of engine compartment, then remove radiator reservoir tank.
16. Disconnect wires and connectors from check connector, igniter connector and vacuum sensor connector.
17. Disconnect ground strap from left fender apron.
18. Disconnect engine wire clamp from wire bracket, then remove bracket retaining bolts and bracket.
19. Disconnect noise filter.
20. Disconnect two vacuum hoses from charcoal canister, then remove canister retaining bolts and canister.
21. Disconnect heater hose from water inlet.
22. Disconnect speedometer cable from transaxle.
23. Disconnect fuel hoses, catching any leaking fluid in a container.
24. Remove three clutch release cylinder retaining bolts, then the clutch release cylinder from the transaxle.
25. Disconnect transaxle control cables from transaxle.
26. Disconnect the following vacuum hoses:
a. Vacuum sensor hose from gas filter on air intake chamber.
b. Brake booster hose from air intake chamber.
c. Three A/C hoses from air switching valve (ASV) on air intake chamber.
d. A/C hose from air pipe.
27. Remove engine wire clamp from wire bracket on right fender apron, then disconnect two cowl wire connectors.
28. Disconnect electrical connectors.
29. Remove two engine wire to cowl panel attaching nuts, then pull wire from panel.
30. Raise and support vehicle.
31. Remove lower crossmember attaching bolts and nuts, then the crossmember.
32. Remove front exhaust pipe as follows:
a. Disconnect oxygen sensor connector.
b. Loosen bolt, then disconnect clamp from support bracket.
c. Remove front exhaust pipe-to-catalytic converter attaching bolts and nuts.
d. Disconnect support hook on front exhaust pipe from support bracket, then remove front exhaust pipe and gaskets.
33. On models with automatic transmission, disconnect transaxle control cable from engine mounting center member.
34. On all models, remove front driveshafts as follows:
a. Remove tire and wheel assemblies.
b. Remove cotter pin and locknut cap.
c. Remove bearing locknut while depressing brake pedal.
d. Drain oil from transaxle.
e. Remove brake caliper from steering knuckle and suspend it with wire.
f. Scribe reference marks on hub and rotor disc, then remove rotor disc.
g. Remove cotter pin and tie rod end nut from steering knuckle, then using tie rod end removal tool No. SST 09628-62011 or equivalent, separate tie rod end from steering knuckle.
h. Remove bolt and two nuts attaching lower arm to steering knuckle, then disconnect lower arm from steering knuckle.
i. Using puller tool No. SST 09950-20017 or equivalent, disconnect left side driveshaft from steering knuckle. Cover driveshaft boot shaft with cloth to prevent it from damage.
j. Using a hammer and hub nut wrench or an equivalent, remove left side driveshaft from transaxle. Ensure care is taken not to damage dust cover. Cover hub nut wrench with cloth so transaxle body is not damaged.
k. Use a hammer and brass bar to tap out right side driveshaft.
35. Disconnect heater hose from water inlet pipe.
36. On models equipped with A/C, proceed as follows:
a. Disconnect A/C compressor connector, then remove drive belt.
b. Remove four A/C compressor retaining bolts, pull compressor away from mounting.
c. Using wire, suspend compressor from radiator support.
37. On all models, remove power steering pump drive belt.
38. Remove two power steering pump attaching bolts, then use a wire to suspend pump to cowl.
39. Remove eight engine mounting center member attaching bolts, then the center member.
40. Remove front engine mounting through bolt and mounting insulator.
41. Remove two mounting bracket attaching bolts and bracket.
42. Remove rear engine mounting through bolt and mounting insulator.
43. Remove three mounting bracket attaching bolts and bracket.
44. Remove connector from ground wire on righthand fender apron.
45. Remove three right side engine mounting stay attaching bolts and mounting stay.
46. Remove two left side engine mounting stay attaching bolts and mounting stay.
47. Remove ground strap from transaxle.
48. Attach an engine chain hoist or equivalent to engine hangers.
49. Remove through bolt and three lefthand mounting insulator attaching bolts, then the insulator.
50. Remove three lefthand mounting bracket attaching bolts.
51. Remove through bolt and two righthand mounting insulator attaching bolts, then the insulator.
52. Lift engine slowly and carefully out of vehicle. Be careful not to hit power steering gear housing or neutral start switch.
53. Reverse procedure to install. Rearm airbag system, refer to MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/AIRBAG ARMING & DISARMING.
