Fig. 69 Connecting Tachometer:

1. Start engine and allow to reach normal operating temperature.
2. Connect a tachometer test probe to terminal IG of the check connector. Fig. 69

NOTE: Never let the tachometer lead touch ground as this could cause damage to the igniter and/or coil. Be sure to check that your tachometer is compatible with this ignition system. Consult the operating manual for your instrument.

3. Using a service wire, connect terminals TE1 and E1 of the check connector located in the engine compartment. Fig. 70
4. Check idle speed.

Idle Speed: 800 rpm

5. Using a timing light, verify that the timing mark on the timing cover is aligned with the mark on the crankshaft pulley. Fig. 72

Ignition Timing: 10° BTDC at idle

6. If not as specified, loosen distributor hold down bolts and rotate housing to align marks.
7. Tighten the distributor bolts and recheck the ignition timing.
8. Remove service wire.

Ignition Timing: 5 - 22° BTDC at idle

10. Disconnect tachometer and timing light from the engine.
