Ignition Timing: Adjustments
Fig. 40 Connecting Tachometer:
1. Start engine and allow to reach normal operating temperature.
2. Connect a tachometer test probe to terminal IG of the check connector located on the left strut tower. Fig. 40
NOTE: Never let the tachometer lead touch ground as this could cause damage to the igniter and/or coil. Be sure to check that your tachometer is compatible with this ignition system. Consult the operating manual for your instrument.
Fig. 41 Shorting Check Connector Terminals:
3. Using a service wire, connect terminals TE1 and E1 of the check connector. Fig. 41
4. Allow engine to operate at idle speed.
Fig. 72 Base Ignition Timing Marks:
5. Using a timing light, verify that the timing mark on the timing cover is aligned with the mark on the crankshaft pulley. Fig. 72
Ignition Timing: 10° BTDC at idle
6. If marks do not align, loosen distributor hold-down bolts and rotate distributor housing until timing marks align.
7. Tighten the distributor bolts and recheck the ignition timing.
8. Remove service wire.
Fig. 73 Advance Ignition Timing Marks:
9. Check idle advance timing with service wire removed. Fig. 73
Ignition Timing:
4A-FE 5 - 15° BTDC at idle
4A-GE Approx. 16° BTDC at idle
10. Disconnect tachometer and timing light from engine.
