INSPECTION AND ADJUSTMENT OF VALVE CLEARANCE

HINT: Inspect and adjust the valve clearance when the engine is cold.

1. DISCONNECT HIGH-TENSION CORDS FROM SPARK PLUGS
2. REMOVE CYLINDER HEAD COVER
3. SET NO.1 CYLINDER TO TDC/COMPRESSION

(a) Turn the crankshaft pulley and align its groove with timing mark "0" of the No.1 timing belt cover.
(b) Check that the valve lifters on the No.1 cylinder are loose and valve lifters on the No.4 cylinder are tight.
If not, turn the crankshaft one revolution (3600°) and align the mark as above.

4. INSPECT VALVE CLEARANCE

(a) Check only the valves indicated in the illustration.
^ Using a thickness gauge, measure the clearance between the valve lifter and camshaft.
^ Record the valve clearance measurements which are out of specification. They will be used later to determine the required replacement adjusting shim.

Valve clearance (Cold):
Intake: 0.15 - 0.25 mm (0.006 - 0.010 in.)
Exhaust: 0.20 - 0.30 mm (0.008 - 0.012 in.)

(b) Turn the crankshaft one revolution (3600°) and align the mark as above.

(c) Check only the valves indicated as shown. Measure the valve clearance.

5. ADJUST VALVE CLEARANCE

(a) Using SSTs, press down the valve lifter with SST (A) and hold the valve lifter down with SST (B).
SST 09248-55010

(b) Remove the adjusting shim with a small screwdriver and magnetic finger.

HINT: For easy removal of the shim, when setting SST (B), set it on the lifter so there is a wide space in the removal direction.

(c) Determine the replacement adjusting shim size by using the following Formula or Charts.

^ Using a micrometer, measure the thickness of the shim which was removed.
^ Calculate the thickness of the new shim so the valve clearance comes within specified value.

T: Thickness of used shim
A: Measured valve clearance
N: Thickness of new shim

Intake side: N = T + (A - 0.20 mm (0.008 in.))
Exhaust side: N = T + (A - 0.25 mm (0.010 in.))

^ Select a new shim with a thickness as close as possible to the calculated values.

HINT: Shims are available in 17 sizes, in increments of 0.050 mm (0.0020 in.), from 2.500 mm (0.0984 in.) to 3.300 mm (0.1299 in.).

(d) Install a new adjusting shim.

^ Place a new adjusting shim on the valve lifter.
^ Using SST (A), press down the valve lifter and remove SST (B).

6. RECHECK VALVE CLEARANCE
7. INSTALL CYLINDER HEAD COVER
8. CONNECT HIGH-TENSION CORDS TO SPARK PLUGS
9. INSPECT AND ADJUST IGNITION TIMING

Ignition timing: 10° BTDC @ idle (w/ Terminals TE1 and E1 connected)

10. INSPECT AND ADJUST IDLE SPEED

Idle speed (w/ Cooling fan OFF):
2WD (Federal and Canada): 700 rpm
2WD (California): 800 rpm
4WD: 800 rpm

11. INSPECT AND ADJUST DASHPOT (DP) SETTING SPEED

DP setting speed (w/ Cooling fan OFF):
2WD: 1,500 rpm
4WD (M/T): 1,800 rpm
4WD (A/T): 2,200 rpm
