Shift Interlock: Service and Repair

DESCRIPTION

To minimize the possibility of incorrect operation of the automatic transaxle, a shift lock system is fitted in all AT models of '90 Corolla.
The shift lock system consists of two mechanisms, a shift lock mechanism and a key interlock mechanism.

In addition to these two mechanisms, a shift lock override button is provided for manual cancellation of the shift lock mechanism. However, when the ignition key is in lock position, the shift lock mechanism cannot be cancelled by operating the overdrive button.
The shift lock control system consists of the shift lock solenoid, shift lock control switch, shift lock control computer, parking lock cable, shift lock override button and stop light switch.

Shift Lock System:

COMPONENTS AND CIRCUIT

REMOVAL OF PARKING LOCK CABLE

1. REMOVE REAR AND FRONT CONSOLE BOX

2. REMOVE ENGINE HOOD RELEASE LEVER, LOWER FINISH NO.1 PANEL AND STEERING COLUMN COVERS

3. REMOVE PARKING LOCK CABLE FROM SHIFT LEVER ASSEMBLY

a. Using a small screwdriver, unlock the slide key of the parking lock cable.

b. Remove clips A and B of the parking lock cable.
c. Remove the parking lock cable from the shift lever assembly.

4. REMOVE PARKING LOCK CABLE FROM KEY CYLINDER

a. Using a screwdriver, disconnect the cable from the key cylinder.

b. Remove the parking lock cable from clamps A and B.

INSTALLATION AND ADJUSTMENT OF PARKING LOCK CABLE

1. INSTALL PARKING LOCK CABLE TO KEY CYLINDER

a. Place the parking lock cable as shown in the image, and fix it in place with clamps A and B. Install the cable so that the cable stopper is above clamp B.

b. Align the protrusion of the key cylinder and cable end hole.
c. Connect the parking lock cable to the key cylinder.

2. INSTALL PARKING LOCK CABLE TO SHIFT LEVER ASSEMBLY

a. Turn the ignition key to the ACC position and shift into "P" range position.

b. Push the set cable lever up into the position shown in the image.

c. While pushing the shift lock override button, shift the shift lever into "N" range.

HINT: Check that the set cable lever is positioned as shown in the illustration on the left.

d. Install parking lock cable and clip A and B.

e. Pull on the parking lock cable to remove any looseness.

NOTE: Do not pull strongly on the parking lock cable.

f. Lock the slide key of the parking lock cable.

g. Lightly push the set cable lever in direction A.

HINT: Due to the spring force, the set cable lever will go down to the position shown in the image.

h. Shift the shift lever into "P" range.
i. While pushing the shift lock override button, push the shift lever knob and then release it.

HINT: Check that the set cable lever is released.

3. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN COVERS, LOWER FINISH NO.1 PANEL AND ENGINE HOOD RELEASE LEVER
4. INSTALL FRONT AND REAR CONSOLE BOX

INSPECTION OF ELECTRIC CONTROL COMPONENTS

1. INSPECT SHIFT LOCK CONTROL COMPUTER
Do not disconnect the computer connector. Measure the voltage and continuity between terminals.

2. INSPECT SHIFT LOCK SOLENOID

a. Disconnect the solenoid connector.
b. Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between terminals.

Standard resistance: 28 - 31 Ohms

c. Apply battery voltage between terminals. Check that an operation noise can be heard from the solenoid.

3. INSPECT SHIFT LOCK CONTROL SWITCH
a. Disconnect the shift lock control switch connector.
b. Check whether there is continuity between terminals.
