Parking Brake Shoe: Service and Repair

1. Raise and support rear of vehicle, then remove tire and wheel assembly.
2. On 1989-90 models, remove rear caliper, refer to CALIPER SERVICE procedure.
3. On 1991-92 models, remove caliper mounting bracket.
4. On all models, remove rotor disc, Fig. 6.
5. Remove shoe return springs using spring tool 09717-20010, or equivalent, then the shoe strut and spring.
6. Slide out front shoe, then remove shoe adjusting screw.
7. Remove tension spring and front shoe.
8. Slide out rear shoe, then disconnect parking brake cable from parking brake shoe lever.
9. Measure brake drum inside diameter. Maximum inside diameter should be 6.61 inches on 1989-90 models. On 1991-92 models, the maximum limit is 6.97.
10. Measure brake shoe lining thickness. Minimum thickness should be .039 inch. If lining is less than minimum, replace brake shoes.

11. Measure clearance between parking brake shoe and lever, Fig. 7. If clearance is greater than .0138 inch, replace shim to obtain correct clearance.
12. Apply suitable grease to the backing plate, adjusting screw and sliding surfaces of the shoe.
13. Install parking brake lever to the cable.
14. Install rear shoe, tension spring, front shoe and shoe adjusting screw.
15. Install front shoe and return spring using a suitable tool.
16. Install strut and spring, then the rear shoe return spring using a suitable tool.
17. Install rotor disc, aligning groove on rear axle shaft flange and service hole on the disc, then temporarily install hub nuts.
18. Turn adjuster and expand shoes until rotor disc locks, then return adjuster eight notches.
19. Install caliper assembly and rear wheel.
