Displaying & Reading Trouble Codes
INITIAL CHECK
This is an automatic test performed by the ABS computer to test for system malfunctions. The ABS computer performs this test every time that the engine is started and the car reaches a speed of above 4 mph. The computer test covers the three position solenoids, bypass solenoid, and the pump motor in the actuator. A check for actuator noise should be performed after the engine has been started and vehicle speed is above 4 mph. An actuator noise should be heard.
DESCRIPTION
If an ABS system malfunction occurs, the on board diagnosis system will identify the problem and set the computer code for the trouble items. At the same time, the "ANTILOCK" warning light informs the driver of a malfunction. By turning the ignition switch on and disconnecting the actuator check connector, the trouble can be identified by the number of blinks (diagnostic code) of the warning light. The smallest number (code) will be identified first, in the event of there are more than one code.
SYSTEM FUNCTIONAL TEST
1. Check battery voltage is above 12 volts.
2. Check that the warning light turns on.
a. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
b. Check that the "ANTILOCK" warning light turns on for 3 seconds. If the light fails to come on, check the fuse, bulb and the wiring harness.

READING DIAGNOSTIC CODES
1. Turn ignition on.
2. Disconnect the actuator check connector.
3. Watch the blinking "ANTILOCK" light and read the number of blinks. The first number of blinks will equal the first digit of a two digit diagnostic code. After a 1.5 second pause, the 2nd number of blinks will equal the second number of a two digit code. If there are two or more codes, there will be a 4.5 second pause between each, and codes will begin from the small values and continue to the larger. A complete list of diagnostic codes can be found in DIAGNOSTIC CODES.
4. If there is no malfunction (operating normally), the warning light will blink once every 0.5 seconds.
5. After the bad components has been repaired, clear the diagnostic codes. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC CODES
NOTE: If the battery is disconnected while doing repairs, all diagnostic codes will be erased from the computer.
6. Connect the actuator check connector.
7. Turn the ignition on, and check that the "ANTILOCK" warning light goes off after the warning light goes on for 3 seconds.
