Differential Case Service


1. Make reference marks between left and right side differential case halves.
2. Remove 8 case halves attaching bolts, then separate halves by tapping with plastic hammer.
3. Remove two side gears, two side gear thrust washers, spider, four pinion gears and four pinion thrust washers.
4. Install side gear thrust washer on side gear, then install in right side of case.
5. Install four pinion gears and thrust washers to spider, then install spider in right side of case.
6. While holding side gear, measure side gear backlash. Backlash should be .002-.0079 inch. Measure backlash at right side case and at left side case.
7. If backlash is not within specifications, install a different thickness thrust washer. Washers of same thickness must be used on both right and left sides.
8. Install side gears and thrust washers to right side case.
9. Install pinion gears and spider to right side case.
10. Install side gear and thrust washer to left side case.
11. Lubricate differential case parts with gear oil.
12. Align right and left side case reference marks and position together.
13. Install 8 attaching bolts and torque to 35 ft. lbs.
