Oil Pump: Service and Repair

COMPONENTS FOR OIL PUMP AND PRESURE REGULATOR VALVE REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

OIL PUMP AND PRESSURE REGULATOR VALVE REMOVAL

HINT: When repairing the oil pump, the oil pan and strainer should be removed and cleaned.

1. REMOVE HOOD
2. REMOVE TIMING BELT

HINT: When removing the RH engine mounting, attach the engine hoist chain to the lifting bracket on the engine and lift the engine slightly.

3. REMOVE CRANKSHAFT TIMING PULLEY AND OIL PUMP PULLEY
4. REMOVE OIL DIPSTICK
5. DRAIN ENGINE OIL
6. DISCONNECT FRONT EXHAUST PIPE
7. REMOVE OIL PAN
(a) Remove the 2 nuts and 8 bolts.

(b) Insert the SST blade between the cylinder block and oil pan, cut off applied sealer and then remove the oil pan.
SST 09032-00100

NOTICE:
^ Do not use SST for the oil pump body side and rear oil seal retainer.
^ Be careful not to damage the oil pan flange.

8. REMOVE OIL STRAINER
Remove the 3 bolts and oil strainer with the 0-ring.

9. REMOVE PRESSURE REGULATOR VALVE
10. REMOVE OIL PUMP

(a) Remove the 9 bolts and tension spring bracket.

(b) Using a soft-faced hammer, carefully tap off the oil pump.
(c) Remove the oil pump body and the 0-ring.

PRESSURE REGULATOR INSPECTION
1. DISASSEMBLE PRESSURE REGULATOR VALVE

(a) Using snap ring pliers. remove the snap ring.
(b) Remove the retainer. spring and pressure regulator valve piston.

2. INSPECT PRESSURE REGULATOR VALVE
Coat the valve piston with engine oil and check that it falls smoothly into the valve hole by its own weight. If necessary, replace the valve.

3. ASSEMBLE PRESSURE REGULATOR VALVE
(a) Insert the pressure regulator valve piston, spring and retainer.
(b) Using snap ring pliers, install the snap ring.

OIL PUMP INSPECTION
1. INSPECT BODY CLEARANCE

Using a thickness gauge, measure the clearance between the driven rotor and pump body.

Standard clearance: 0.10 -0.16 mm (0.0039 - 0.0063 in.)
Maximum clearance: 0.20 mm (0.0079 in.)

If the clearance is greater than maximum, replace the oil pump rotor set and/or pump body.

2. INSPECT TIP CLEARANCE

Using a thickness gauge, measure the clearance between both rotor tips.

Standard clearance: 0.06 - 0.15 mm (0.024 - 0.059 in.)
Maximum clearance: 0.20 mm (0.0079 in.)

If the clearance is greater than maximum, replace the oil pump rotor set.

3. INSPECT SIDE CLEARANCE

Using a thickness gauge and flat block, measure the side clearance as shown.

Standard clearance: 0.03 - 0.09 mm (0.0012 - 0.0035 in.)
Maximum clearance: 0.10 mm (0.0039 in.)

If the clearance is greater than maximum, replace the oil pump rotor set and/or pump body.

OIL PUMP OIL SEAL REPLACEMENT

1. REMOVE OIL SEAL
Using a screwdriver, pry out the oil seal.

2. INSTALL OIL SEAL
(a) Using socket wrench and a hammer, tap in a new oil seal until the seal is flush with the outside face of oil pump.
(b) Apply MP grease to the oil seal lip.

CRANKSHAFT FRONT OIL SEAL REPLACEMENT
Pry the front crankshaft oil seal out of the oil pump body and replace the oil seal.

OIL PUMP AND PRESSURE REGULATOR VALVE INSTALLATION
1. INSTALL OIL PUMP

(a) Remove any old packing (FIPG) material and be careful not to drop any oil on the contact surfaces of the oil pump and cylinder block.
^ Using a razor blade and gasket scraper, remove all the old packing (FIPG) material from the contact surfaces and sealing grooves.
^ Thoroughly clean all components to remove all the loose material.
^ Using a non-residue solvent, clean both sealing surfaces.

(b) Apply seal packing to the oil pump as shown in the illustration.
Seal packing: Part No.08826-00080 or equivalent

^ Install a nozzle that has been cut to a 2-3 mm (0.08-0.12 in.) opening.

HINT: Avoid applying an excessive amount to the surface.

^ Parts must be assembled within 5 minutes of application. Otherwise the material must be removed and reapplied.
^ Immediately remove nozzle from the tube and reinstall cap.

(c) Place a new 0-ring into the groove.

(d) Install the oil pump and the tension spring bracket with the 9 bolts.

Torque: 7.4 N.m (75 kgf.cm, 65 ft.lbf)

2. INSTALL PRESSURE REGULATOR VALVE

Torque: 29 N.m (300 kgf.cm. 22 in.lbf)

3. INSTALL OIL STRAINER
(a) Apply a little engine oil to a new 0-ring.
(b) Install the 0-ring to the oil strainer.
(c) Install the oil strainer with the 3 bolts.

Torque: 10 N.m (100 kgf.cm, 7 ft.lbf)

4. INSTALL OIL PAN
(a) Remove any old packing material and be careful not to drop any oil on the contact surfaces of the oil pan and cylinder block.
^ Using a razor blade and gasket scraper, remove all the packing (FIPG) material from the contact surfaces.
^ Thoroughly clean all components to remove all the loose material.
^ Clean both sealing surfaces with a non-residue solvent.

NOTICE: Do not use a solvent which will affect the painted surfaces.

(b) Apply seal packing to the oil pan as shown in the illustration.
Seal packing: Part No.08826-00080 or equivalent

Seal diameter:
a: 6 - 7 mm (0.24 - 0.28 in.)
b: 3 - 4 mm (0.12- 0.16 in.)
