Ignition Timing: Adjustments
Fig. 91 Connecting Tachometer:
1. Start engine and allow to reach normal operating temperature.
2. Connect a tachometer test probe to the distributor terminal service connector or the IG terminal of the check connector. Fig. 91
NOTE: Never let the tachometer lead touch ground as this could cause damage to the igniter and/or coil. Be sure to check that your tachometer is compatible with this ignition system. Consult the operating manual for your instrument.
Fig. 93 Shorting Check Connector Terminals:
3. Using a service wire, connect terminals TE1 and E1 of the check connector. Fig. 93
4. Check the engine idle speed.
Idle Speed: 800 rpm
Fig. 94 Base Ignition Timing Marks:
5. Using a timing light, verify that the timing mark on timing cover is aligned with the mark on the crankshaft pulley. Fig. 94
Ignition Timing: 10° BTDC at idle
6. If timing marks do not align, loosen distributor hold-down bolts and rotate distributor housing until marks align.
7. Tighten the distributor bolts and recheck the ignition timing.
8. Remove service wire.
9. Check idle advance timing with service wire removed.
Ignition Timing: 7 - 17° BTDC at idle
10. Disconnect tachometer and timing light from engine.
