Thermostat: Service and Repair
REMOVAL OF THERMOSTAT1. DRAIN COOLANT
(a) Open the radiator and engine drain cocks, and allow the coolant to drain into a clean container.
(b) Remove the radiator cap.
2. DISCONNECT CONNECTOR FROM WATER TEMP. SWITCH
3. DISCONNECT RADIATOR OUTLET HOSE
4. REMOVE WATER INLET AND THERMOSTAT
(a) Remove the two nuts, and remove the water inlet, gasket with thermostat from the water outlet housing.
(b) Remove the gasket from the thermostat.
INSPECTION OF THERMOSTAT
NOTE: The thermostat is numbered with the valve opening temperature.
(a) Immerse the thermostat in water and heat the water gradually.
(b) Check the valve opening temperature and the valve lift.
If the valve opening temperature and valve lift are not within the following specifications, replace the thermostat.
Valve opening temperature: 80 - 84°C (176 - 183°F)
Valve lift: More than 8 mm (0.31 in.) at 95°C (203°F)
(c) Check that the valve spring is tight when the thermostat is fully closed.
If not closed, replace the thermostat.
INSTALLATION OF THERMOSTAT
1. PLACE THERMOSTAT IN WATER INLET
Install a new gasket to the thermostat.
2. INSTALL WATER INLET WITH THERMOSTAT
Install the water inlet and the thermostat with the jiggle valve upward.
Install and torque the two nuts.
Torque: 50 kg-cm (43 in.-lb, 4.9 N-m)
3. CONNECT RADIATOR OUTLET HOSE
4. CONNECT CONNECTOR OF WATER TEMP. SWITCH
5. REFILL WITH COOLANT
6. START ENGINE AND CHECK FOR LEAKS
