Expansion Valve: Service and Repair

Fig. 11 A/C System Components:





1. Disconnect battery ground cable and discharge system refrigerant.
2. Disconnect refrigerant lines at cooling unit Fig. 11, capping all openings.
3. Remove grommets from inlet and outlet fittings.
4. Remove glove compartment, then lower instrument panel cover.
5. On 1989-90 models, remove side air duct.
6. On all models, disconnect A/C electrical connectors and ground strap.
7. On 1991-92 models, remove A/C amplifier and bracket.
8. On all models, remove cooling unit attaching nuts and bolts, then remove unit.
9. On 1989-90 models, remove idling stabilizer amplifier.
10. On all models, disconnect electrical connector at cooling unit.
11. On 1991-92 models, remove A/C main relay and blower resistor from case.
12. On all models, remove thermistor.

13. Remove clamps and screws securing lower evaporator case, then remove lower evaporator case, Figs. 12 and 13.
14. Remove two attaching screws, then the upper evaporator case.
15. Lift out evaporator. The expansion valve may now be removed.

16. Reverse procedure to install, then evacuate and recharge system and check for leaks. If evaporator is replaced, add 1.4-1.7 oz. of new refrigerant oil to compressor.
