Removal and Installation








REMOVAL
1. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL PAD

NOTICE: If the airbag connector is disconnected with the ignition switch at ON or ACC, Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) will be recorded.





a. Place the front wheels facing straight ahead.
b. Remove the 2 steering wheel lower No.2 covers.
c. Using a torx socket wrench, loosen the 2 torx screws.

HINT: Loosen the 2 screws until the groove along the screw circumference catches on the screw case.





d. Pull out the wheel pad from the steering wheel and disconnect the airbag connector.

CAUTION:
^ When storing the wheel pad, keep the upper surface of the pad facing upward.
^ Never disassemble the wheel pad.

NOTICE: When removing the wheel pad, take care not to pull the air bag wire harness.





2. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL
a. Disconnect the connector.
b. Remove the steering wheel set nut.
c. Place matchmarks on the steering wheel and main shaft assembly.
d. Using Special Service Tool (SST), remove the steering wheel.
(SST) 09950-50011 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05020)
3. REMOVE COLUMN UPPER AND LOWER COVERS
a. Remove the lower No.2 cover from the column lower cover.
b. Remove the 3 screws, column upper cover and column lower cover.
4. REMOVE COWL SIDE TRIM AND FRONT DOOR INSIDE SCUFF PLATE
a. Remove the front door inside scuff plate.
b. Remove the clip and cowl side trim.
5. REMOVE LOWER FINISH PANEL
a. Remove the lower Left-Hand instrument cover.
b. Remove the 2 panel set bolts and lower finish panel.
6. REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL FINISH LOWER LEFT-HAND PANEL
Remove the 2 panel set bolts and instrument panel finish lower Left-Hand panel.
7. REMOVE NO.2 DUCT HEATER TO REGISTER
8. REMOVE COMBINATION SWITCH WITH SPIRAL CABLE
a. Disconnect the connectors.
b. Disconnect the airbag connector.
c. Remove the 3 screws and combination switch with spiral cable.
9. REMOVE SPIRAL CABLE

NOTICE: Do not disassemble the cable or apply oil to it.





10. Column shift: DISCONNECT SHIFT CONTROL CABLE
a. Using a screwdriver, disconnect the shift control cable from the shift lever housing.
b. Using a offset wrench (23 mm), disconnect the shift control cable from the cable bracket of column tube.

11. DISCONNECT INTERMEDIATE SHAFT





a. Place matchmarks on the intermediate shaft and control valve shaft.
b. Loosen the bolt A and remove the bolt B.





c. Loosen the clamp of the dust seal and disconnect the intermediate shaft.
12. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY
a. Disconnect the connectors.
b. Remove the 4 nuts and steering column assembly.
13. REMOVE INTERMEDIATE SHAFT
Remove the bolt A and intermediate shaft.
14. REMOVE DUST SEAL
Remove the dust seal from the intermediate shaft.

INSTALLATION
1. INSTALL DUST SEAL
Install the dust seal to the intermediate shaft.
2. INSTALL INTERMEDIATE SHAFT
Temporarily install the intermediate shaft with the bolt A.
3. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY
a. Install the steering column assembly with 4 nuts.

Torque: 25 Nm (260 kgf-cm, 19 ft. lbs.)

b. Connect the connectors.





4. CONNECT INTERMEDIATE SHAFT
a. Align the matchmarks on the intermediate shaft and control valve shaft.
b. Install the bolt B.

Torque: 35 Nm (360 kgf-cm, 26 ft. lbs.)

c. Torque the bolt A.

Torque: 35 Nm (360 kgf-cm, 26 ft. lbs.)





d. Tighten the clamp of the dust seal.
5. Column shift: CONNECT SHIFT CONTROL CABLE
a. Connect the shift control cable to the cable bracket of column tube.
b. Connect the shift control cable to the shift lever housing.
6. INSTALL SPIRAL CABLE
7. INSTALL COMBINATION SWITCH WITH SPIRAL CABLE
a. Install the combination switch with spiral cable with 3 screws.
b. Connect the airbag connector.
c. Connect the connectors.
8. INSTALL NO.2 DUCT HEATER TO REGISTER
9. INSTALL INSTRUMENT PANEL FINISH LOWER LEFT-HAND PANEL
Install the instrument panel finish lower Left-Hand panel with 2 panel set bolts.
10. INSTALL LOWER FINISH PANEL
a. Install the lower finish panel with 2 panel set bolts.
b. Install the lower Left-Hand instrument cover.
11. INSTALL COWL SIDE TRIM AND FRONT DOOR INSIDE SCUFF PLATE
a. Install the cowl side trim with the clip.
b. Install the front door inside scuff plate.
12. INSTALL COLUMN UPPER AND LOWER COVERS
a. Install the column upper and lower covers with 3 screws.
b. Install the lower No.2 cover to the column lower cover.





13. CENTER SPIRAL CABLE
a. Check that the front wheels are facing straight ahead.
b. Turn the spiral cable counterclockwise by hand until it becomes harder to turn.
c. Then rotate the spiral cable clockwise about 2.5 turns to align the red mark.

HINT: The spiral cable will rotate about 2.5 turns to either left or right of the center.

14. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL
a. Align the matchmarks on the steering wheel and main shaft assembly.
b. Install the steering wheel set nut.

Torque: 35 Nm (360 kgf-cm, 26 ft. lbs.)

c. Connect the connector.





15. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL PAD
a. Connect the airbag connector.
b. Install the steering wheel pad after confirming that the circumference groove of the torx screws is caught on the screw case.
c. Using a torx socket wrench, install the 2 screws.

Torque: 8.8 Nm (90 kgf-cm, 78 inch lbs.)

NOTICE:
^ Never use airbag parts from another vehicle. When replacing parts, replace with new ones.
^ Make sure the wheel pad is installed to the specified torque.
^ If the wheel pad has been dropped, or there are cracks, dents or other defects on the case or connector, replace the wheel pad with a new one.
^ When installing the wheel pad, take care that the wirings do not interfere with other parts and are not pinched between other parts.

d. Install the 2 steering wheel lower No.2 covers.
16. CHECK STEERING WHEEL CENTER POINT
