The Park/Neutral position switch detects the gearshift position and sends the shifter position signal to the transmission control ECU. For safety, the engine can be started only when the vehicle is in P or N gear position. The transmission control ECU will conclude that there is a malfunction if it detects that the park/neutral position switch sent either a P or N position signal to the transmission control ECU while the vehicle is being driven. The transmission control ECU will illuminate the MIL and set a DTC.
