The transmission control ECU changes gears in response to the request for a shift change from the ECM. If a gear does not change according to a shift change request twice during 1 driving cycle, the transmission ECU will conclude that there is a mechanical malfunction in the transmission system, illuminate the MIL and set a DTC.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

HINT: Read freeze frame data using hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool, as freeze frame data records the engine conditions when a malfunction is detected. When troubleshooting, it is useful for determining whether the vehicle was running or stopped, the engine was warmed up or not, etc. at the time of the malfunction.
