Rear Drive Shaft Overhaul






OVERHAUL
1. REMOVE REAR WHEEL
2. SEPARATE REAR STABILIZER LINK ASSY LH
3. REMOVE REAR AXLE SHAFT LH NUT

4. REMOVE REAR BRAKE DRUM SUB-ASSY
5. SEPARATE SPEED SENSOR REAR LH
6. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE SHOE STRUT SET LH

7. REMOVE FRONT BRAKE SHOE
SST 09718-00010
8. REMOVE REAR BRAKE AUTOMATIC ADJUST LEVER LH
9. REMOVE REAR BRAKE SHOE

10. SEPARATE PARKING BRAKE CABLE ASSY No. 3
11. SEPARATE REAR BRAKE TUBE No. 4
SST 09023-00100
12. SEPARATE REAR SUSPENSION ARM ASSY No. 1 LH
13. SEPARATE UPPER CONTROL ARM ASSY
14. REMOVE REAR AXLE ASSY LH
15. REMOVE REAR DRIVE SHAFT ASSY LH





a. LH: Using a hammer and a hub nut wrench, remove the rear drive shaft assy LH.

NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the dust cover, boot and oil seal.





b. RH: Using a brass bar and a hammer, remove the rear driveshaft assy RH.

NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the dust cover, boot and oil seal.





16. INSPECT REAR DRIVE SHAFT ASSY LH
a. Check that there is no play in the outboard joint shaft.
b. Check that the inboard joint shaft slides smoothly in the thrust direction.
c. Check that there is no remarkable play in the radial direction of the inboard joint shaft.
d. Check for damage to boots.





17. REMOVE REAR DRIVE SHAFT INBOARD JOINT BOOT LH CLAMP
a. One Touch Clamp Type: Using a screwdriver, disclamp the inboard joint boot LH clamp.
b. Claw Engagement Type: Using a needle nose pliers, remove the inboard joint boot LH clamp as shown in the illustration.





18. REMOVE REAR DRIVE SHAFT INBOARD JOINT BOOT LH No. 2 CLAMP
a. One Touch Clamp Type: Using a screwdriver, disclamp the inboard joint boot LH No. 2 clamp.
b. Claw Engagement Type: Using a needle nose pliers, remove the inboard joint boot LH No. 2 clamp as shown in the illustration.





19. SEPARATE INBOARD JOINT BOOT
a. Separate the inboard joint boot from the inboard joint assy LH.
20. REMOVE REAR DRIVE SHAFT INBOARD JOINT ASSY LH
a. Place matchmarks on the inboard joint assy LH and outboard joint shaft assy LH.

NOTICE: Do not punch the marks.

b. Pull out the inboard joint assy LH.

NOTICE: Be careful not to drop the balls.





c. Place matchmarks on the outboard joint shaft assy LH, inner race and cage.

NOTICE: Do not punch the marks.

d. Remove the 6 balls.
e. Slide the cage toward outboard joint.





f. Using a snap ring expander, remove the rear drive shaft LH snap ring.





g. Using a brass bar and a hammer, remove the inner race.

NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the inner race.

h. Remove the cage.
i. Remove the inboard joint boot, inboard joint boot LH clamp and inboard joint boot LH No. 2 clamp.





21. REMOVE REAR DRIVE SHAFT OUTBOARD JOINT BOOT LH CLAMP
a. One Touch Clamp Type: Using a screwdriver, disclamp the outboard joint boot LH clamp.
b. Claw Engagement Type: Using a needle nose pliers, remove the outboard joint boot LH clamp as shown in the illustration.





22. REMOVE REAR DRIVE SHAFT OUTBOARD JOINT BOOT LH No. 2 CLAMP
a. One Touch Clamp Type: Using a screwdriver, disclamp the outboard joint boot LH No. 2 clamp.
b. Claw Engagement Type: Using a needle nose pliers, remove the outboard joint boot LH No. 2 clamp as shown in the illustration.
23. REMOVE OUTBOARD JOINT BOOT
a. Remove the outboard joint boot from the outboard joint shaft assy LH.





24. REMOVE REAR DRIVE SHAFT INBOARD JOINT LH SHAFT SNAP RING
a. Using a screwdriver, remove the LH shaft snap ring.





25. REMOVE REAR DRIVE SHAFT DUST COVER LH
a. Using SST and a press, remove the dust cover LH.

NOTICE: Be careful not to drop the inboard joint.





26. INSTALL REAR DRIVE SHAFT DUST COVER LH
a. Using SST, a steel plate and a press, install a new dust cover LH.
SST 09527-21011

NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the dust cover.

27. INSTALL REAR DRIVE SHAFT INBOARD JOINT LH SHAFT SNAP RING
a. Install a new LH shaft snap ring to the inboard joint assy LH.





28. INSTALL OUTBOARD JOINT BOOT

HINT: Before installing the boot, wrap the spline of the drive shaft with vinyl tape to prevent the boot from being damaged.

a. Through a new outboard joint boot and 2 new clamps to the drive shaft.
b. Pack the outboard joint shaft and boot with grease in the boot kit.
Grease capacity: (Color = Yellow) 71 - 81 grams (2.5 - 2.9 ounces)





29. INSTALL REAR DRIVE SHAFT OUTBOARD JOINT BOOT LH No. 2 CLAMP
a. Holding the clamp near the closing claws, using needle nose pliers, position the holes in the clamp's free end over the closing claws.
b. Secure clamp by drawing the closing claws together.





30. INSTALL REAR DRIVE SHAFT OUTBOARD JOINT BOOT LH CLAMP
a. Holding the clamp near the closing claws, using needle nose pliers, position the holes in the clamp's free end over the closing claws.
b. Secure clamp by drawing the closing claws together.
31. INSTALL REAR DRIVE SHAFT INBOARD JOINT ASSY LH
a. Through a new inboard joint boot, 2 new inboard joint clamps and cage.





b. Align the matchmarks, using a brass bar and a hammer, install the inner race.





c. Using a snap ring expander, install a new rear drive shaft LH snap ring.





d. Align the matchmarks, install the cage to the inner race.
e. Install the 6 balls with grease to the inner race.
f. Pack the inboard joint shaft and boot with grease in the boot kit.
Grease capacity: (Color = Yellow) 132 - 142 grams (4.7 - 5.0 ounces)





g. Align the matchmarks, install the inboard joint assy LH to the outboard joint shaft assy LH.
32. INSTALL INBOARD JOINT BOOT
a. Install the inboard joint boot to the inboard joint assy LH and outboard joint shaft assy LH.





33. INSTALL REAR DRIVE SHAFT INBOARD JOINT BOOT LH No. 2 CLAMP
a. Holding the clamp near the closing claws, using needle nose pliers, position the holes in the clamps free end over the closing claws.
b. Secure clamp by drawing the closing claws together.





34. INSTALL REAR DRIVE SHAFT INBOARD JOINT BOOT LH CLAMP
a. Holding the clamp near the closing claws, using needle nose pliers, position the holes in the clamps free end over the closing claws.
b. Secure clamp by drawing the closing claws together.
35. INSPECT REAR DRIVE SHAFT ASSY LH





a. Check to see that there is no remarkable play in the outboard joint.
b. Check to see that the inboard joint slides smoothly in the thrust direction.
c. Check to see that there is no remarkable play in the radial direction of the inboard joint.
d. Check the boots for damage.

NOTICE: Move the drive shaft assy keeping it level.

e. Make sure that the 2 boots are on the shaft groove.





f. Make sure that the 2 boots are not stretched or contracted when the drive shaft is at standard length.
Drive shaft standard length: 693.3 ± 5.0 mm (27.295 ± 0.197 inch)





36. INSTALL REAR DRIVE SHAFT ASSY LH
a. Align the shaft splines, install the rear drive shaft assy LH with brass bar and hammer.

NOTICE:
^ Set the snap ring with opening side facing downward.
^ Be careful not to damage the dust cover, boot and oil seal.

HINT: Whether the inboard joint assy LH is in contact with the pinion shaft or not can be known from the sound or feeling when driving it.

37. TEMPORARY TIGHTEN UPPER CONTROL ARM ASSY
38. INSTALL REAR AXLE ASSY LH
39. TEMPORARY TIGHTEN REAR SUSPENSION ARM ASSY No. 1 LH
40. INSTALL REAR BRAKE TUBE No. 4
SST 09023-00100
41. CONNECT PARKING BRAKE CABLE ASSY No. 3
42. APPLICATION HIGH TEMPERATURE GREASE
43. INSTALL REAR BRAKE SHOE
SST 09718-00010
44. INSTALL REAR BRAKE AUTOMATIC ADJUSTER LEVER LH
45. INSTALL FRONT BRAKE SHOE
SST 09718-00010
46. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE SHOE STRUT SET LH
47. INSTALL SPEED SENSOR REAR LH
48. CHECK REAR DRUM BRAKE INSTALLATION
49. INSTALL REAR BRAKE DRUM SUB-ASSY
50. INSTALL REAR AXLE SHAFT LH NUT
51. REMOVE REAR BRAKE DRUM SUB-ASSY
52. INSPECT BEARING BACKLASH
53. INSPECT AXLE HUB DEVIATION
54. INSTALL REAR BRAKE DRUM SUB-ASSY
55. ADJUST REAR DRUM BRAKE SHOE CLEARANCE
56. INSTALL REAR AXLE SHAFT LH NUT
57. INSTALL REAR STABILIZER LINK ASSY LH
58. BLEED BRAKE LINE
59. INSTALL REAR WHEEL
Torque: 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.)
60. STABILIZE SUSPENSION
61. FULLY TIGHTEN UPPER CONTROL ARM ASSY
62. FULLY TIGHTEN REAR SUSPENSION ARM ASSY No. 1 LH
63. CHECK FLUID LEVEL IN RESERVOIR
64. INSPECT AND ADJUST REAR WHEEL ALIGNMENT
65. CHECK ABS SPEED SENSOR SIGNAL
