TSB REVISION NOTICE:

^ December 3, 2004: TSB content has been expanded, and 2005 model year 4Runner, Sequoia, Tacoma and Tundra have been added to Applicable Vehicles.

^ December 2, 2003: Prius has been added as an applicable model.

Previous versions of this TSB should be discarded.

Introduction

The new automatic transmission fluid (ATF) "WS" has been introduced on 2004 - 2005 model year 4Runner, Land Cruiser and Prius vehicles; and 2005 model year Sequoia, TacomaV6 (1GR-FE), and Tundra vehicles.

NOTE:
ATF "WS" is NOT compatible with any other type of transmission fluid.

Applicable Vehicles

^ 2004 model year 4Runner vehicles equipped with 2UZ-FE engine and A750E/A750F transmission.

^ All 2005 model year 4Runner vehicles.

^ 2004 - 2005 model year Land Cruiser and Prius vehicles.

^ 2005 model year Sequoia and Tundra vehicles.

^ 2005 model year Tacoma vehicles equipped with 1GR-FE ("6) engine.

Identification Procedure

The following symptoms will occur if non-WS ATF is put into a WS-compatible automatic transmission:

^ Non-WS ATF has a higher viscosity. Because of this, response to changes in fluid pressure decreases, lengthening shift time, causing shift flare.

^ When the fluid temperature is low, (approximately -40°F [-40°C]), air can enter the oil pump causing cavitation resulting in low fluid pressure.

^ Fuel consumption increases.

The following symptoms will occur if ATF WS is put into a non-WS-compatible automatic transmission:

^ ATF WS has a lower viscosity than other ATFs. Because of this, response to changes in fluid pressure increases, shortening shift time, causing shift shock.

^ If WS is filled into a non-WS automatic transmission, the fluid could leak out under high temperatures (approximately 284°F [140°C]).

Vehicles that use ATF WS can be identified by:

A. ATF dipstick is no longer installed.

B. WS" stamped on the refill plug.

Fluid level inspection:

Check the fluid level by inspecting for leakage. If there are no leaks present at time of inspection, the fluid level is correct.

For details about the ATF WS filling procedures (except Prius), refer to the Technical Information System (TIS), applicable model and model year Repair Manual: Automatic Transmission! Trans: Automatic Transmission Fluid (A750E/A750F).

For Prius, refer to TIS: applicable model year Prius Repair Manual: Hybrid Transaxle: On - Vehicle Inspection.
