BRAKE (REAR): REAR BRAKE (for Drum Type): REMOVAL
REMOVAL
HINT:
- Use the same procedure for the LH side and RH side.
- The following procedure listed is for the LH side.
- The rear wheel brake cylinder assemblies can be disassembled and inspected with the rear wheel brake cylinder assemblies installed to the backing plate. It is not necessary to remove the rear wheel brake cylinder assemblies from the backing plates except when the rear wheel brake cylinder assemblies should be replaced.
1. REMOVE REAR WHEEL
2. REMOVE REAR BRAKE DRUM
(a) Release the parking brake and remove the rear brake drum.
HINT: If the rear brake drum cannot be removed easily, perform the following procedure.
(1) Remove the shoe adjusting hole plug and insert a screwdriver through the hole into the backing plate, and hold the automatic adjust lever away from the adjuster.
(2) Using another screwdriver, contract the brake shoe by turning the adjusting bolt.
3. REMOVE REAR BRAKE SHOE (for Front Side)
(a) Using SST, separate the shoe return spring from the rear brake shoe.

NOTE: Do not damage the wheel cylinder boot.
(b) Using SST, remove the 2 shoe hold down spring cups, shoe hold down spring, pin and rear brake shoe.
SST: 09718-00011
(c) Remove the tension spring.
4. REMOVE REAR BRAKE STRUT SET
(a) Remove the shoe return spring from the rear brake shoe and remove the rear brake shoe strut set.
5. REMOVE REAR BRAKE SHOE (for Rear Side)
(a) Using SST, remove the 2 shoe hold down spring cups, shoe hold down spring, pin and rear brake shoe.

(b) Using needle-nose pliers, separate the parking brake cable.
6. REMOVE REAR BRAKE AUTOMATIC ADJUST LEVER
(a) Remove the rear brake automatic adjust lever tension spring and rear brake automatic adjust lever.
7. REMOVE REAR BRAKE PARKING BRAKE SHOE LEVER SUB-ASSEMBLY
(a) Using a screwdriver, remove the C-washer and rear brake parking brake shoe lever sub-assembly.
8. DRAIN BRAKE FLUID
NOTE: Immediately wash off any brake fluid that comes into contact with any painted surfaces.
9. REMOVE REAR DRUM BRAKE BLEEDER PLUG CAP
10. REMOVE REAR DRUM BRAKE BLEEDER PLUG
11. REMOVE REAR WHEEL BRAKE CYLINDER ASSEMBLY
(a) Using a union nut wrench (10 mm), disconnect the brake line from the rear brake wheel cylinder assembly.
(b) Remove the 2 bolts and rear wheel brake cylinder assembly from the backing plate.
