P112 HYBRID VEHICLE CONTROL: HYBRID CONTROL SYSTEM: P0A93-346: Inverter Cooling System Performance
DTC P0A93-346 - Inverter Cooling System Performance
DTC P0A93-347 - Inverter Cooling System Performance
DESCRIPTION
The inverter converts the high-voltage direct current of the HV battery into the alternating current for MG2 and MG1. The inverter generates heat during the conversion process. Therefore, similar to MG2 and MG1, the inverter is cooled by a special cooling system consisting of an electric water pump, cooling fan and radiator. This cooling system is independent of the engine cooling system. The hybrid vehicle control ECU estimates the coolant temperature from the inverter temperature and monitors for excessive increases in the coolant temperature.
HINT: If the inverter temperature increases excessively, the inverter output for air conditioning will be restricted and, as a result, the air conditioning system may not be effective, or physical shocks may occur because the inverter output for MG2 and MG1 is restricted. If the hybrid vehicle control ECU restricts output due to increases in the inverter temperature or estimated inverter coolant temperature, this will be recorded in the operation history data.
The HV control ECU monitors the electric water pump, cooling fan and cooling system, and detects a malfunction.
MONITOR DESCRIPTION
If the HV control ECU detects a malfunction in the electric water pump, fan, or radiator, it illuminates the MIL and sets a DTC.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE
PROCEDURE
1. CHECK QUANTITY OF HV COOLANT
(a) Check that there is a sufficient amount of coolant for the inverter.
OK:
There is a sufficient amount of coolant for the inverter
NG -- ADD HV COOLANT
OK -- Continue to next step.
2. CHECK COOLANT HOSE
(a) Check that the hoses of the cooling system are not bent or clogged (refer to the cooling system).
OK:
The hoses of the cooling system are not bent or clogged
NG -- CORRECT TO NORMAL CONDITION
OK -- Continue to next step.
3. CHECK CONNECTOR CONNECTION CONDITION (WATER PUMP CONNECTOR AND SHORT CONNECTOR)
(a) Check the connection condition of the water pump connector.
OK:
Connector has been connected securely and there is no poor connection.
(b) Check the connection condition of the short connector.
OK:
Connector has been connected securely and there is no poor connection.
NG -- CONNECT SECURELY
OK -- Continue to next step.
4. CHECK WATER PUMP W/ MOTOR AND BRACKET ASSEMBLY
(a) Turn the power switch ON (IG).
(b) Check the operation of the water pump.
OK:
Coolant is sloshing in the reservoir tank
NG -- CHECK WATER PUMP W/ MOTOR AND BRACKET ASSEMBLY
OK -- Continue to next step.
5. CHECK CONNECTION CONDITION OF COOLING FAN MOTOR CONNECTOR (LOOSENESS AND POOR CONTACT)
(a) Check the connection condition of the cooling fan motor connectors.
OK:
Connectors have been connected securely and there is no poor connection.
NG -- CONNECT SECURELY
OK -- Continue to next step.
6. INSPECT COOLING FAN MOTOR
(a) Inspect the cooling fan motor Testing and Inspection.
NG -- REPLACE COOLING FAN MOTOR AND ADD ENGINE COOLANT
OK -- Continue to next step.
7. INSPECT NO. 2 COOLING FAN MOTOR
(a) Inspect the No. 2 cooling fan motor Testing and Inspection.
NG -- REPLACE NO. 2 COOLING FAN MOTOR AND ADD ENGINE COOLANT
OK -- Continue to next step.
8. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (INVERTER TEMP-(MG1, MG2), CONVERTER TEMPERATURE)
(a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
(b) Turn the power switch ON (IG) and the tester ON.
(c) Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Hybrid Control / Data List.
(d) Read "Inverter Temp-(MG1)", "Inverter Temp-(MG2)" and "Converter Temperature" on the tester.
Result:
The difference between the indicated minimum and maximum values among "Inverter Temp-(MG1)", "Inverter Temp-(MG2)" and "Converter Temperature" is 68°F (20°C) or more.
NOTE: Using the Techstream, while the inverter and converter are warm (68°F (20°C) or more), read the following Data List items: "Inverter Temp-(MG1)", "Inverter Temp-(MG2)" and "Converter Temperature". When the inverter and converter are cold, 59°F (15°C) will be displayed.
NO -- REPLACE WATER PUMP W/ MOTOR AND BRACKET ASSEMBLY
YES -- REPLACE INVERTER WITH CONVERTER ASSEMBLY
9. CHECK WATER PUMP W/ MOTOR AND BRACKET ASSEMBLY
(a) Remove the water pump w/ motor and bracket assembly.
(b) Connect the battery positive terminal to terminal 2 and the battery negative terminal to terminal 1.
(c) Check that the water pump w/ motor and bracket assembly operates properly.
NOTICE:
- Do not connect the positive and negative poles of the battery to the wrong terminals.
- Complete the check within 10 seconds of connection.
OK:
Water pump w/ motor and bracket assembly operates properly.
NG -- REPLACE WATER PUMP W/ MOTOR AND BRACKET ASSEMBLY
OK -- REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (WATER PUMP W/MOTOR AND BRACKET ASSEMBLY POWER SOURCE CIRCUIT)
