DTC C1278/78 - Abnormal Change in Output Signal of Rear Speed Sensor LH (Test Mode DTC)
DESCRIPTION
The speed sensors detect the wheel speeds and send appropriate signals to the skid control ECU.
Speed sensor rotors have rows of alternating N and S magnetic poles, and their magnetic fields change as the rotors turn.
The speed sensors detect those magnetic changes and send pulse signals to the skid control ECU. The ECU monitors the wheel speeds through these pulse signals to control the ABS control system.
HINT:
- DTC C0210/33 and C1238/38 relate to the skid control sensor RH.
- DTC C0215/34 and C1239/39 relate to the skid control sensor LH.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE
NOTICE:
- Disassembly of the skid control sensor from the rear axle hub and bearing assembly is prohibited.
- Check the speed sensor signal in test mode after cleaning or replacement Test Mode Procedure.
PROCEDURE
1. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (MOMENTARY INTERRUPTION)
(a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
(b) Turn the ignition switch ON.
(c) Turn the tester on.
(d) Using the Techstream, check for any momentary interruptions in the wire harness of the speed sensor.
Select the following menu items: Chassis / ABS/VSC/TRAC / Data List.
DATA LIST: ABS
OK:
There are no momentary interruptions.
HINT: Perform this inspection before removing the sensor and connector.
NG -- CHECK IF SKID CONTROL ECU AND SKID CONTROL SENSOR CONNECTORS ARE SECURELY CONNECTED
OK -- Continue to next step.
2. READ VALUE USING DATA LIST (SKID CONTROL SENSOR)
(a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
(b) Start the engine and drive the vehicle.
(c) Turn the tester on.
(d) Select the following menu items: Chassis / ABS/VSC/TRAC / Data List.
(e) Select the item "RR (RL) Wheel Speed" in the Data List and read the value displayed on the Techstream.
DATA LIST: ABS
(f) Check that there is no significant difference between the speed value displayed on the Techstream and the speed value displayed on the speedometer when driving the vehicle.
OK:
There is no significant difference in the displayed speed values.
HINT: There is a tolerance of +- 10% in the speedometer indication.
NG -- CHECK SKID CONTROL SENSOR INSTALLATION
OK -- Continue to next step.
3. PERFORM TEST MODE INSPECTION (SIGNAL CHECK)
(a) Perform a TEST MODE inspection and check for DTCs Test Mode Procedure.
OK:
No DTCs output.
NG -- CHECK SKID CONTROL SENSOR INSTALLATION
OK -- Continue to next step.
4. RECONFIRM DTC
(a) Clear the DTC(s) ABS (Antilock Brake System) (for Sedan).
(b) Start the engine.
(c) Drive the vehicle at a speed of 12 mph (20 km/h) or more for at least 60 seconds.
(d) Check if the same DTC(s) is output ABS (Antilock Brake System) (for Sedan).
Result:
B -- REPLACE REAR AXLE HUB AND BEARING ASSEMBLY (SKID CONTROL SENSOR AND REAR SPEED SENSOR ROTOR)
A -- CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS
5. CHECK IF SKID CONTROL ECU AND SKID CONTROL SENSOR CONNECTORS ARE SECURELY CONNECTED
(a) Check if the skid control ECU and the skid control sensor connectors are securely connected.
NEXT -- Continue to next step.
Result:
B -- END
A -- Continue to next step.
7. CHECK SKID CONTROL SENSOR INSTALLATION
(a) Check the skid control sensor installation.
OK:
There is no gap between the sensor and rear axle carrier.
NG -- REPLACE REAR AXLE HUB AND BEARING ASSEMBLY (SKID CONTROL SENSOR AND REAR SPEED SENSOR ROTOR)
OK -- Continue to next step.
8. INSPECT SKID CONTROL SENSOR
(a) Install the skid control sensor.
(b) Disconnect the skid control sensor connector.
(c) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.
Standard resistance (RH):
Standard resistance (LH):
NOTE: Check the skid control sensor signal after replacement Test Mode Procedure.
HINT: Because the rear axle hub and bearing assembly cannot be disassembled. if the rear skid control sensor needs replacement, replace the rear axle hub and bearing assembly.
NG -- REPLACE REAR AXLE HUB AND BEARING ASSEMBLY (REAR SPEED SENSOR AND REAR SPEED SENSOR ROTOR)
OK -- Continue to next step.
9. INSPECT SKID CONTROL SENSOR WIRE
(a) Disconnect the skid control sensor wire.
(b) Measure the resistance.
Standard resistance (LH):
Standard resistance (RH):
