Battery From 06.99, Removing and Installing
.Battery removing and installing
CAUTION!
Before working on the electrical system:
- Obtain the anti-theft radio security code.
- Switch the ignition off.
- Disconnect the battery Ground (GND) strap.
- After reconnecting the battery, re-code and check operation of the anti-theft radio.
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items needed
- VAG 1331 Torque wrench (or equivalent 5 - 50 Nm)
Removing
First remove fuse holder on battery.
- Switch off ignition
- Press locking lugs together -arrow- and fold open cover with fuse holder.
- Unclip cover with fuse holder from battery insulation enclosure and set aside.
- Disconnect battery Ground (GND) strap from battery (-) negative pole.
- Disconnect battery positive (+) terminal clamp and remove cable.
- Remove bolts -1- and -2-.
- Move power steering fluid reservoir to the side (do not disconnect lines).
- Remove bolt -3- and remove battery hold- down bracket.
- Carefully slide battery with insulation enclosure -A- to the left, and lift from engine compartment.
Installing
To be sure the battery seats securely, only install batteries with a 10.5 mm battery foot strip and adhere to the following work sequences:
- Install battery with insulation enclosure so lug of battery carrier (arrow) engages in battery groove -1-.
- It must not be possible to move the battery to the left or to the right.
The battery is correctly installed when the center groove in the battery foot strip aligns with threaded hole in the battery carrier (arrows).
- On batteries with hose for central venting make sure venting hose is not kinked. Only then can battery vent freely.
- On batteries without hose for central venting make sure opening on upper side of battery cover is not blocked.
- Install battery hold-down bracket and tighten bolt -3- to 22 Nm (16 ft lb).
- Reinstall power steering fluid reservoir (install bolts -1- and -2-.),
- Install positive (+) cable clamp onto battery positive terminal.
CAUTION!
- Battery terminal clamps must only be installed by hand without force, this prevents damage to the battery housing.
- Battery terminals must no longer be greased.
- Tighten battery positive (+) terminal clamp securing screw to 6 Nm (53 in.lb).
- Install negative (-) terminal clamp (battery Ground (GND) strap) to negative terminal on battery.
- Tighten securing bolt to 6 Nm (53 in.lb).
CAUTION!
After installing, check if the battery is seated securely. If the battery is not secured properly, the following will result:
- Shortened battery service life due to vibration damage
- Battery cell and plate damage
- Electrolyte leakage due to battery case damage
- Poor collision safety
- Clip cover with fuse holder into battery insulation enclosure and fold down onto top of battery.
- Engage cover into enclosure -arrow-.
NOTE: When the battery is reconnected, check the operation of electrical equipment (radio, clock and convenience electrics etc.).
