Valve Guide Seal: Service and Repair


Valve stem seals, replacing (with cylinder head installed)
Special tools and equipment





- 3122B Plug spanner
- 3362 Valve spring compressor with thrust piece 3362/1
- 3364 Puller
- 3365 Fitting tool
- VW 653/3 Pressure hose
- VAG 1331 Torque wrench (550 Nm)
- VAG 1332 Torque wrench (40200 Nm)

Removing
- Remove toothed belts.
- Remove camshafts.
- Remove valve lifters and place them with contact surface downward. Ensure that lifters are not interchanged.
- Remove spark plugs with spark plug spanner 31 22B.
- Set piston of appropriate cylinder to "bottom dead center".
- Screw pressure hose VW 653/3 into spark plug thread.





- Secure fitting tool 3362 to cylinder head with tool securing bolt.
- Position fitting tool for compressing valve springs to one of following positions: outer inlet valves: lower position center inlet valve: upper position exhaust valve: lower position
- Connect pressure hose to compressed air system supplying at least 6 bar and remove valve springs.
- Pull off valve stem seals with 3364.

Installing





- Place plastic sleeve supplied on appropriate valve stem. This will prevent new valve stem seal being damaged.
- Place new valve stem seal in fitting tool 3365.
- Oil valve stem seal sealing lip and press carefully onto valve guide.
- The rest of the assembly is basically a reverse of the disassembly sequence.
