Gear oil in center differential, draining or filling after repairs
Special tools and equipment
- VAG1306 Drip tray
- VAG1331 Torque wrench
Additional information
- Drive vehicle onto a 4 pillar vehicle hoist or over a pit so that it stands level.
- Separate right exhaust pipe, if installed, from rear exhaust system at double clamp at front. Push front exhaust pipe in area of catalyst to right.
Draining gear oil
- Place VAG1306 Drip tray underneath.
- Remove drain plug -arrow A- and drain gear oil.
- Always replace drain plug.
- Screw in new drain plug -arrow A-.
Filling gear oil
- Remove plug -arrow B- to check gear oil and top up to lower edge of hole with gear oil.
Specification.
- Screw in old plug.
If the exhaust system was loosened at the front or removed, it must be tightened or installed for the test drive, and then again removed and installed for checking the oil level.
- Carry out a test drive of at least 15 minutes pure driving time and then check gear oil in center differential and top up if necessary.
Only after a test drive is it ensured that the newly added gear oil has reached the Torsen differential.
The oil level is correct when the transmission is full to the lower edge of the filler hole.
- Always replace drain plug.
- When oil level is correct, seal center differential with new plug -arrow B-.
