Starter Motor: Service and Repair



Starter - 8-cyl. Engines, Removing And Installing

CAUTION:
Before beginning repairs on the electrical system:
- Obtain the anti-theft radio security code.
- Switch off all electrical consumers.
- Switch ignition off and remove ignition key.
- Disconnect negative ( - ) battery terminal.
- When disconnecting and reconnecting battery terminals, observe all applicable Notes and torque specifications, as well as instructions on performing OBD program and electrical system function checks as specified in this Repair Manual.


Special tools, testers and auxiliary items needed





- VAG 1331 Torque wrench (or equivalent 5 - 50 Nm)





- VAG 1332 Torque wrench (or equivalent 40 - 200 Nm)

Removing
- Disconnect battery.
- Drain engine coolant
- Support engine with engine support bridge 10-222A
- Drain engine oil
- Remove oil pipe from oil pan
- Remove front subframe
- Remove right lower coolant pipe
- Disconnect electrical connections at Generator (GEN).





- Remove bolts -1- and remove right engine support -2- downwards.
- Bolt -1- tightening torque: 50 Nm (37 ft. lb.)
- Disconnect electrical connection to starter solenoid (terminal 50) on starter -3-.
- Remove main electrical connection to starter solenoid (terminal 30) from starter -3-
- Terminal 30 nut tightening torque: 13 Nm (10 ft. lb.)





- - Remove bolts -1- and remove starter downwards.

Installing
Install in reverse order of removal. Observe correct torque specifications.
