Rear Flange Shaft Seal

Rear flange shaft seal, replacing
- Observe general repair instructions.
(Transmission installed)

Special tools and equipment





- 3402 Pressure piece





- VAG1331 Torque wrench

Removing
- If necessary, remove front exhaust system with catalyst.





- Remove heat shield -A- from vehicle underbody.
- Remove cover plate -B- (arrows).
- Disconnect driveshaft from transmission.
- Place VAG1306 Drip tray underneath.
- Drain gear oil in center differential.





- Undo rear flange shaft, secure flange shaft against turning with a drift when doing this.
- Pull out flange shaft.





- Remove seal using a suitable screwdriver.

Installing
Install in reverse order but note following:
- Coat outer circumference and sealing lip of oil seal with gear oil.
- Half fill space between sealing lip and dust lip with grease G 052 128 A1.





- Drive seal in onto stop using 3402 Pressure piece.
- Secure rear flange shaft with Allen head bolt.
- Connect driveshaft.
- If removed, install front exhaust system with catalyst.
- Fill center differential with gear oil and check.
