Drive/Propeller Shaft: Adjustments


Driveshaft, adjusting
Special tools and equipment





- 3139/3 Adapters
- 3298 Driveshaft assembly appliance
- 3405 Driveshaft assembly appliance
- VAG1331 Torque wrench
- Remove rear section of exhaust system.





- Remove heat shield -A- from vehicle underbody.
Driveshaft with tube diameter 60 mm front and rear
Do not set assembly tool over balancing weights.





- Install 3405 Driveshaft assembly appliance and tighten the plastic nuts.

Driveshaft with tube diameter 60 mm front and 70 mm rear
- Do not set assembly tool over balancing weights.





- Install 3298 Driveshaft assembly appliance with 3139/3 Adapters and tighten plastic nuts.

In the following figures, the adjustment of the driveshaft using 3298 Driveshaft assembly appliance is illustrated. The adjustment using 3405 Driveshaft assembly appliance is identical.





- Remove intermediate mount securing nuts -arrows-.





- Measure dimension -a-.
Left and right-hand sides must be same.
Table of shims





Allocate shims according to parts catalog.
Install shims as follows:





- Loosen plastic nuts on assembly device -arrows A- until intermediate bearing retaining bracket-2- has clearance -a- on one side to stud -1-.





- Place shim as measured -1- on stud and swing intermediate bearing retaining bracket -2- to other side.
- Place 2nd shim -4- on stud -3-.
- Tighten both plastic nuts on assembly device -arrow A-.
Center driveshaft longitudinally:
- Slide driveshaft to rear onto stop with assembly appliance.





- Mark position of intermediate mount on body (arrow -A-).
- Slide driveshaft forward onto stop with assembly appliance.





- Mark position of intermediate mount on body (arrow -B-).
- Bolt intermediate mount in center position (arrow-C-).
- Then remove assembly appliance.
- Install heat shield to vehicle floor.
- Install rear section of exhaust system.
