Camshaft Oil Seal: Service and Repair

Camshaft oil seals, replacing

Notes on seals
Replacing seal of intake camshaft (on camshaft position sensor)

Replacing seal of exhaust camshaft (on camshaft pulley)

Notes on seals
^ The PTFE seal (Teflon), which is gradually introduced, can be used instead of the older type seal with annular spring.

^ Distinguishing feature: The older type seal with an annular spring has only one sealing lip - arrow 1 -, which is pressed by the spring. The PTFE seal has a thread type contact surface - arrow 2 -, but does not have an annular spring.
^ PTFE seals are allocated to the shaft direction of rotation (see arrow on seal). A wrong direction of rotation leads to oil leakage.
^ PTFE seals must be installed free of oil and grease. The shaft must also be free of oil and grease.
^ When installing, the contact surface of the PTFE seal must not be stretched too much. This is the reason why it must not be installed with the guide sleeve for seals with an annular spring.
^ Always install a PTFE seal as spare part if a PTFE seal has been used before!

Intake camshaft seal (on camshaft position sensor), replacing

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
^ Oil seal extractor 2085
^ Assembly device T10071
^ Torque wrench V.A.G 1331
^ Torque wrench V.A.G 1332

Removing

- Disconnect connector from Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor -G40- - arrow -.
- Remove toothed belt guard upper part.
- Remove camshaft position sensor housing.

- Remove washer and hood for camshaft position sensor.
- To guide seal extractor, thread bolt 2085-1 into camshaft onto limit stop by hand.
- Unscrew inner part of oil seal extractor 2085 two turns (approx. 3 mm) out of outer part and lock with knurled screw.

- Lubricate threaded head of oil seal extractor, place it in position and exerting firm pressure screw it into oil seal as far as possible.
- Loosen knurled screw and turn inner part against camshaft until oil seal is pulled out.

Installing
- Observe notes

Sealing ring with annular spring

- Fit guide sleeve T10071-5 onto camshaft journal.
- Lightly oil sealing lip of oil seal.
- Slide seal onto guide sleeve T10071-5.

PTFE seal
- Before installing, remove oil remains from camshaft journal with a clean cloth.
- Set oil-free guide sleeve T10071-5 onto camshaft journal.
- Slide dry seal onto guide sleeve T10071-5.

Continuation for both seal versions

- Press seal with sleeve T10071-3 and M8 60 bolt - 1 - onto limit stop.
- Install camshaft position sensor hood with notch into intake camshaft.
- Install washer (with taper showing outward) and tighten securing bolt to 25 Nm.
- Install camshaft position sensor housing and tighten to 10 Nm.
- Install toothed belt guard upper part.

- Connect camshaft position sensor connector - arrow -.

Exhaust camshaft seal (on camshaft pulley), replacing

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
^ Oil seal extractor 2085
^ Retainer 3036
^ Assembly device T10071
^ Torque wrench V.A.G 1331
^ Torque wrench V.A.G 1332

Removing
- Remove toothed belt guard upper part.

- Set camshaft pulley to TDC No. 1 cylinder by turning crankshaft. Mark on camshaft pulley must align with cylinder head marking.
- Remove cylinder head cover.
- Remove toothed belt only from camshaft sprocket.
- Turn crankshaft back slightly.
- Remove camshaft sprocket. When loosening bolt hold camshaft pulley with counterhold 3036.
- Remove woodruff key from camshaft.

- To guide seal extractor, screw securing bolt of camshaft pulley - arrow - into camshaft onto limit stop by hand.
