Valve Guide Seal: Service and Repair



Valve stem seals, replacing
(with cylinder head installed)





Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
^ Torque wrench V.A.G 1331
^ Torque wrench V.A.G 1332
^ Spark plug removal tool 3122 B
^ Extractor for valve stem seal 3364
^ Pressure hose VW 653-3
^ Valve spring compressor 3362 and press piece 3362-1

^ Ignition coil puller T40039

Removing
- Remove camshafts.
- Take out hydraulic lifters and place them with running surface down. Ensure that lifters are not interchanged.
- Remove ignition coils as follows:

Engine code APH





- Disconnect 4-pin connector - arrow - from ignition coils.
- Remove securing bolts and remove ignition coils with output stages vertically from spark plugs.

Engine codes AWP, AWV, BKF, BNU





- Disconnect 4-pin connector - 2 - from ignition coils - 1 -.





- Pull ignition coils with final output stages vertically off of spark plugs with ignition coil puller T40039.

Continuation for all engine codes
- Remove spark plugs with spark plug removal tool 3122 B.
- Set cylinder to "bottom dead center".





- Screw pressure hose VW 653-3 into spark plug thread.
- Insert press piece 3362-1 into valve spring compressor 3362.
- Mount valve spring compressor 3362 to cylinder head with securing bolts supplied in tool. Bring valve spring compressor into following position to press valve springs together:
- outer intake valves: lower position center intake valve: upper position exhaust valve: lower position
- Connect pressure hose to a compressed air system of at least 6 bar and remove valve springs.





- Pull off valve stem seals with 3364.

Installing





- Place plastic sleeve - A - supplied onto appropriate valve stem. This will prevent new valve stem seal - B - from being damaged.
- Place new valve stem seal in valve stem seal driver 3365.
- Oil valve stem seal sealing lip and press carefully onto valve guide.

Further assembly is basically the reverse of the disassembly procedure.
