Safety Precautions When Working on Fuel Supply System

Safety Precautions When Working On Fuel Supply System

CAUTION:
When doing any repair work, especially in the engine compartment, pay attention to the following due to the confined conditions:
- Route all the various lines (e.g. for fuel, hydraulic system, EVAP system, coolant, refrigerant, brake, vacuum) and electrical wiring so that the original positions are restored.
- Ensure that there is sufficient clearance to all moving or hot components.

When removing and installing the fuel gauge sender or fuel pump (fuel delivery unit) from a full or partially full fuel tank, the following must be observed:

CAUTION: Fuel supply lines are under pressure. Before loosening hose connections, wrap a cloth around the connection. Then release pressure by carefully pulling hose off connection.

- Before beginning work, place an extraction hose close to the sender opening in the fuel tank to extract escaping fuel fumes and switch on an exhaust extraction system. If no exhaust extraction system is available, a radial fan with a displacement greater than 15 cubic m/h can be used providing that the motor is not in the air flow.
- Prevent skin contact with fuel. Wear fuel-resistant gloves.

- For safety reasons, fuse No. 28 must be removed from the fuse holder before opening the fuel system. Otherwise the fuel pump will be activated by the driver's door contact switch.
