Engine Oil: Application and ID
Oil Grade
US markets
CAUTION: Oils with viscosities 0W-20 and 5W- 20 must not be used.
Gasoline engines use oil grade ACEA A1/B1. Oil of ACEA A3/B3/B4 or ACEA A5/B5 grades may also be used. Oils with a viscosity of 0W-30 and 0W-40 must fulfill ACEA A3/B3/B4 or ACEA A5/B5. If oil of the ACEA grade as specified above cannot be used, oil that fulfills at least API SJ/Energy conserving or ILSAC GF-2 must be used. This does not damage the engine, but neither does it provide the same protection for the engine as an ACEA grade engine oil. More frequent oil changes are recommended if API or ILSAC oil is used.
Viscosity
In extreme driving conditions resulting in abnormally high oil temperature or oil consumption, such as alpine driving with a great deal of engine braking or highway driving at high speed, oils of ACEA A3/B3, ACEA A3/B3/B4 or ACEA A5/B5 grade are recommended. In these driving conditions, select a fully synthetic engine oil that provides the engine with added protection.

Gasoline engines use oil grade ACEA A1/B1. Oil of ACEA A3/B3, ACEA A3/B3/B4 or ACEA A5/B5 grade may also be used. Oils with a viscosity of 0W-30 and 0W-40 must fulfill ACEA A3/B3/B4 or ACEA A5/B5. -If oil of the ACEA grade as specified above cannot be used, oil that fulfils at least API SJ/CF must be used. This does not damage the engine, but neither does it provide the same protection for the engine as an ACEA grade engine oil. More frequent oil changes are recommended if API oil is used.
Diesel engines use oil grade ACEA A3/B3/B4. Oil of Global DLD-3 grade can also be used. Volvo fully synthetic engine oil is recommended for gasoline/diesel turbo engines.
Do not use extra oil additives. These can damage the engine.

In extreme driving conditions resulting in abnormally high oil temperature or oil consumption, such as alpine driving with a great deal of engine braking and highway driving at high speed, oils of ACEA A3/B3, ACEA A5/B5 (gasoline) or ACEA A3/B3/B4 (gasoline and diesel) grade are recommended. In these driving conditions, select a fully synthetic engine oil that provides the engine with added protection.
