Automatic Transmission Installation
Special Tools Required
- Subframe alignment pin 070AG-SJAA10S
- Engine support hanger, A and Reds AAR-T1256*
- Engine hanger balancer bar VSB02C000019*
- Front subframe adapter VSB02C000016*

NOTE: Use fender covers to avoid damaging painted surfaces.
1. If you did not clean the ATF cooler when you removed the transmission, and you are installing an overhauled or remanufactured transmission, clean the ATF cooler. ATF Cooler Cleaning
2. Install the clamp bracket (A).
3. Replace the upper transmission mount bolt (B).
4. Secure the vacuum line (A) with the bolt.
5. Install a new O-ring (A) on the torque converter (B), then install the torque converter on the mainshaft (C).
NOTE: Make sure the torque converter is fully engaged on the mainshaft, starter shaft and the ATF pump gear. Failure to do so will result in severe transmission or engine damage.
6. Install the 14 x 20 mm dowel pin (D) and the 10 x 20 mm dowel pin (E) in the torque converter housing.
7. Place the transmission on a jack, and raise the transmission to the engine level, then fit the transmission to the engine.
8. Install the lower transmission housing mounting bolts.
9. Install the rear transmission housing mounting bolts.
NOTE: Be careful not to damage the CKP sensor.
10. Install the front transmission housing mounting bolts.
11. Remove the jack.
12. Install the upper transmission housing mounting bolts.
13. Position the transmission upper mount (A), and loosely install new transmission upper mount bolts (B) to the body frame.
14. Loosely install new transmission upper mount bracket bolts (C) and nut (D) to the transmission housing.
15. Install the front engine mount bracket with new bolts.
16. Clean the areas where the intermediate shaft contacts the transmission (differential) with solvent, and dry with compressed air.
NOTE: Do not wash the rubber parts with solvent.
17. Install a new set ring (A) on the intermediate shaft (B). Apply ATF to the intermediate shaft splines (C), then install the intermediate shaft. Be sure not to allow dust or other foreign particles to enter the transmission.
NOTE: Insert the intermediate shaft carefully to prevent damaging the oil seal (D).
18. Install the rear warm up three way catalytic converter (WU-TWC) bracket (E).
19. Connect the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor connector (A), and install the CKP sensor cover (B) and the sensor harness clamp bracket (C).
20. Clean the areas where the left driveshaft contacts the transmission (differential) with solvent, and dry with compressed air.
NOTE: Do not wash the rubber parts with solvent.
21. Install a new set ring (A) on the left driveshaft (B). Then install the left driveshaft. Be sure not to allow dust or other foreign particles to enter the transmission. Turn the steering knuckle fully outward, and slide the driveshaft into the differential until you feel its set ring fully engage the side gear.
NOTE: Insert the left driveshaft horizontally to prevent damaging the oil seal (C).
22. Apply the recommended grease to the right driveshaft inboard-joint splines. Driveshaft Installation
23. Slide the right driveshaft over the intermediate shaft splines until you feel the driveshaft fully engage the intermediate shaft set ring.
24. Install the transmission lower mount with new bolts.
25. Set the front subframe adapter (VSB02C000016) to the front subframe by looping the strap (A) over the front of the front subframe, then secure the strap with the stop (B), then tighten the wing nut (C).
26. Raise the front subframe up to the body, then loosely install new front subframe mounting bolts (A), the front stiffener mounting bolts (B), and new rear stiffener mounting bolts (C).
NOTE: Be careful when connecting these items:
- Front engine mount and its bracket
- Transmission lower mount and front subframe
- Damper forks and lower arms
27. Loosely tighten the front subframe mounting bolt (A) in the right rear stiffener until the front subframe insulator contacts the body; insert the subframe alignment pin (070AG-SJAA10S) through the positioning slot (B) on the right rear stiffener, through the positioning hole (C) on the front subframe, and into the positioning hole on the body.
28. Loosely tighten the front subframe mounting bolt in the left rear stiffener in the same manner as in step 27.
29. Reinsert the subframe alignment pin through the positioning slot on the right rear stiffener, through the positioning hole on the front subframe, and into the positioning hole on the body, then tighten the front subframe mounting bolt to the specified torque.
30. Tighten the front subframe mounting bolt in the left rear stiffener in the same manner as in step 29.
31. Tighten the front subframe mounting bolts in the right front stiffener and the left front stiffener to the specified torque.
32. Check that the positioning holes and slots are aligned using the subframe alignment pin.
33. Tighten the rear and front stiffener mounting bolts to the specified torque. Remove the jack and the front subframe adapter.
34. Install new front subframe middle mount bolts.
35. Install the transmission lower mount nuts.
36. Attach the torque converter to the drive plate with eight bolts (A). Rotate the crankshaft pulley as necessary to tighten the bolts to half of the specified torque, then to the final torque, in a crisscross pattern. After tightening the last bolt, check that the crankshaft rotates freely.
37. Install the torque converter cover (B).
38. Connect the knuckle ball joint (A) and the lower arm (B) on both sides.
39. Install the new damper fork bolt (C) and new self-locking nut (D) on both sides, and loosely tighten the self-locking nuts.
40. Tighten the new castle nut (A) on both sides to the lowest torque specification, then tighten it only far enough to align the slot with the ball joint pin hole. Do not align the castle nut by loosening it.
NOTE: Insert a new cotter pin (B) into the ball joint pin hole from the front to the rear of the vehicle, and bend its end as shown. Check the ball joint pin hole direction before connecting the ball joint.
41. Wipe off any grease contamination from the ball joint tapered section and threads. Reconnect the tie-rod end ball joint (C) to the knuckle. Install a new nut (D), and tighten it to the specified torque.
42. Install a new cotter pin (E) on both sides, and bend it as shown.
43. Install exhaust pipe A with new self-locking nuts and new gaskets (B) (C). Service and Repair
44. Connect the ATF cooler hose (A) to the ATF cooler line (B), and secure the hose with its clip (C). Service and Repair
45. Connect the EPS ground subharness connector at the front of the front subframe.
46. Connect the vacuum hoses (A) to the joint.
47. Install a new rear engine mount bolt (A), then install the rear engine mount stop (B) with the nuts (C).
48. Install a new front engine mount bolt (A), then install the front engine mount stop (B) and the clamp bracket (C) with new nuts (D).
49. Connect the vacuum hose (E) to the vacuum line (F).
50. Tighten the transmission upper mount bolts to 54 N-m (5.5 kgf-m, 40 lbf-ft), then tighten the transmission upper mount bracket bolts and nut to 59 N-m (6.0 kgf-m, 43 lbf-ft).
51. Remove the engine support hanger, the engine hanger balancer bar.
52. Install the connector bracket to the front cylinder head.
53. Install the harness clamp bracket, and the engine mount control solenoid valve bracket to the rear cylinder head.
54. Connect the ATF cooler hoses (A) to the ATF cooler lines (B), and secure the hoses with the clips (C). Service and Repair
55. Connect the transmission fluid pressure switch A (2nd clutch) connector.
56. Secure the harness clamp bracket with the bolt.
57. Connect the EPS subharness 6P connector (A).
58. Remove the vinyl tape, then connect the torque sensor 6P connector (A) to the steering gearbox.
59. Pull up the lever (B) of the EPS motor 3P connector (C), then confirm the connector is fully seated.
60. Install the harness cover (A) on its bracket (B), and secure it with the harness cover mounting bolt.
61. Connect the A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve C connector (C).
62. Install the harness clamp bracket (D), and install the harness clamp (E) on the bracket.
63. Connect these connectors:
- Transmission fluid pressure switch B (3rd clutch) connector (A)
- Output shaft (countershaft) speed sensor connector (B)
- ATF temperature sensor connector (C)
64. Install the harness clamp (D) on its bracket.
65. Connect these connectors:
- Transmission range switch connector (A)
- Input shaft (mainshaft) speed sensor connector (B)
66. Install the harness cover (A) on its bracket (B), and secure it with the bolt.
67. Connect these connectors:
- A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve A connector (C)
- A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve B connector (D)
- 4th clutch transmission fluid pressure switch connector (E)
- Shift solenoid wire harness connector (F)
68. Apply molybdenum grease to the hole in the bushing (A) in the shift cable end (B).
69. Attach the shift cable end to the selector control lever (C), then insert the control pin (D) into the selector control lever hole through the shift cable end, and secure the control pin with the spring clip (E).
70. Secure the shift cable bracket (F) with the nuts.
71. Remove the ATF dipstick.
72. Install the starter (A), a new gasket (B), and the harness clamp bracket (C). Secure the mounting bolts (D) through the harness clamp bracket hole (E), and into the lower mounting bolt thread hole (F).
73. Install the lower radiator hose bracket (A).
74. Install the vacuum line (B) on its bracket (C).
75. Install the positive starter cable (D) and the S terminal connector (E). Make sure the crimped side of the ring terminal faces away from the starter when you connect it.
76. Install the transmission ground terminal (F), and install the lower radiator hose (G) in its clamp (H). Install the ATF dipstick (I).
77. Install the battery base (A), and install the harness clamp (B) and the bolt (C).
78. Loosely install the strut brace mounting nuts (A).
79. Install the vacuum hose (B) on the strut brace.
80. Connect PCM connectors A, B, and C, then install the PCM bracket with the bolts. Service and Repair
81. Install the air cleaner housing. Service and Repair
82. Do the battery installation procedure. Removal and Replacement
83. Refill the transmission with ATF. ATF Replacement
84. Place a floor jack under the lower arm, and raise the front suspension to load it with the vehicle's weight. Do not place the jack against the ball joint pin of the knuckle.
Tighten the damper fork mounting nut while holding the mounting bolt to 64 N-m (6.5 kgf-m, 47 lbf-ft).
85. Tighten the strut brace mounting nuts to 22 N-m (2.2 kgf-m, 16 lbf-ft).
86. Install the engine compartment covers. Service and Repair
87. Reinstall the hood support struts to the upper location on both sides of the hood.
88. Install the splash shield.
89. Install the wheels.
90. Install these items:
- Steering joint EPS Steering Gearbox Removal/Installation
- Steering joint cover EPS Steering Gearbox Removal/Installation
91. Install the steering wheel. Steering Wheel Removal
92. Set the parking brake. Start the engine, and shift the transmission through all positions three times. Check the shift lever operation, A/T gear position indicator operation, and shift cable adjustment.
93. Check and adjust the front wheel alignment. Service and Repair
94. Start the engine in P or N position, and warm it up to normal operating temperature (the radiator fan comes on).
95. Turn off the engine, and check the ATF level. ATF Level Check
96. Do the road test. A/T Road Test
