Steering Gear Replacement




Steering Gear Replacement (AWD)

Special Tools

J-44586 - Power Steering Seal Remover/Installer

For equivalent regional tools, refer to Special Tools Tools and Equipment.

Removal Procedure

Caution:
With wheels of the vehicle facing straight ahead, secure the steering wheel utilizing steering column anti-rotation pin, steering column lock, or a strap to prevent rotation. Locking of the steering column will prevent damage and a possible malfunction of the SIR system. The steering wheel must be secured in position before disconnecting the following components:

* The steering column

* The intermediate shaft(s)

* The steering gear

After disconnecting these components, do not rotate the steering wheel or move the front tires and wheels. Failure to follow this procedure may cause the SIR coil assembly to become un-centered and cause possible damage to the SIR coil. If you think the SIR coil has became un-centered, refer to your specific SIR coil's centering procedure to re-center SIR Coil.

1. Lock the steering column in the straight-ahead position.

2. Disconnect the intermediate steering shaft from the steering gear. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement.

3. Remove as much power steering fluid from the power steering fluid reservoir as possible.

4. Install the universal engine support fixture. Refer to Engine Support Fixture Engine Support Fixture.

5. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle Service and Repair.

6. Disconnect the steering linkage outer tie rods from the steering knuckles. Refer to Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement.

7. Disconnect the stabilizer shaft links at the stabilizer shaft. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Link Replacement Front Suspension.

8. Disconnect the lower control arms from the steering knuckles. Refer to Lower Control Arm Replacement (GNB) Lower Control Arm Replacement (GNB)Lower Control Arm Replacement (GNA) Lower Control Arm Replacement (GNA).

9. Disconnect the steering gear electrical connector.

10. Remove the through bolts for the front and rear transmission mounts. Refer to Transmission Front Mount Replacement Service and Repair and Transmission Rear Mount Replacement (FWD) Service and RepairTransmission Rear Mount Replacement (AWD) Service and Repair.

11. Remove the propeller shaft. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement Propeller Shaft Replacement.

12. Remove the exhaust front pipe. Refer to Exhaust Front Pipe Replacement (AWD) Service and RepairExhaust Front Pipe Replacement (FWD) Service and Repair.

13. Position adjustable jackstands underneath the left and right sides of the rear of the drivetrain and front suspension frame.

14. Lower the vehicle until the drivetrain and front suspension frame is resting lightly on the jackstands.




15. Remove the front suspension frame rear bolts (1), reinforcement bolts (2) and reinforcements (3).

16. Loosen the drivetrain and front suspension frame front bolts.

17. Raise the vehicle while the drivetrain and front suspension frame rests on the jackstands. Do not allow the gap between the body and rear of the frame to exceed a maximum of 50 mm (2 in).

18. Finish removing the stabilizer shaft. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Replacement Front Suspension.

19. Place drain pans under the vehicle.




20. Remove the power steering gear inlet and outlet hose bolt (1) and disconnect the power steering gear inlet hose (2) and power steering gear outlet hose (3) from the steering gear.




21. Remove the steering gear nuts (1), washers (2) and steering gear bolts (3). Discard the nuts and bolts.

22. Leave the power steering gear inlet hose brackets (4) attached to the power steering gear inlet hose.




23. Remove the steering gear (1) from the vehicle through the left front wheelhouse area.

24. If replacing the steering gear (1), transfer any parts as needed.

25. If not replacing the steering gear (1), use the J-44586 - seal remover/installer to replace the steering gear seals.

Installation Procedure




1. Position the steering gear (1) on the vehicle through the left front wheelhouse area.




2. Secure the steering gear and the power steering gear inlet hose brackets (4) to the drivetrain and front suspension frame using NEW steering gear bolts (3), washers (2) and NEW steering gear nuts (1). The washers can be reused.

Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution Fastener Caution.

3. Tighten the steering gear bolts (3) to 110 Nm (81 lb ft) + 160 degrees.




4. Connect the power steering gear inlet hose (2) and power steering gear outlet hose (3) to the steering gear.

5. Install the power steering gear inlet and outlet hose bolt (1) and tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb in).

6. Clean any excess power steering fluid from the vehicle and remove the drain pans.

7. Install the stabilizer shaft onto the drivetrain and front suspension frame. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Replacement Front Suspension.

8. Lower the vehicle until the gap between the frame and body is approximately 12 mm (0.5 in).




9. Install the front suspension frame reinforcements (3), reinforcement bolts (2) and rear bolts (1).

10. Tighten the front suspension frame rear bolts (1) to 160 Nm (118 lb ft).

11. Tighten the front suspension frame reinforcement bolts (2) to 60 Nm (44 lb ft).

12. Tighten the drivetrain and front suspension frame front bolts. Refer to Drivetrain and Front Suspension Frame Replacement Service and Repair.

13. Remove the jackstands from the vehicle.

14. Install the exhaust front pipe. Refer to Exhaust Front Pipe Replacement (AWD) Service and RepairExhaust Front Pipe Replacement (FWD) Service and Repair.

15. Install the propeller shaft. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement Propeller Shaft Replacement.

16. Install the through bolts for the front and rear transmission mounts. Refer to Transmission Front Mount Replacement Service and Repair and Transmission Rear Mount Replacement (FWD) Service and RepairTransmission Rear Mount Replacement (AWD) Service and Repair.

17. Connect the steering gear electrical connector.

18. Connect the lower control arms to the steering knuckles. Refer to Lower Control Arm Replacement (GNB) Lower Control Arm Replacement (GNB)Lower Control Arm Replacement (GNA) Lower Control Arm Replacement (GNA).

19. Connect the stabilizer shaft links at the stabilizer shaft. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Link Replacement Front Suspension.

20. Connect the steering linkage outer tie rods to the steering knuckles. Refer to Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement.

21. Remove the universal engine support fixture. Refer to Engine Support Fixture Engine Support Fixture.

22. Connect the intermediate steering shaft to the steering gear. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement.

23. Fill and bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding Service and Repair.
