Special Tools

* DT-48007 - Spline Holder

* J 42170 - Getrag Axle Bearing Race Installer

* J 42172 - Getrag Axle Bearing Race Installer





1. Install the bearing onto the pinion shaft using the J 42170 - installer (1), the DT-48007 - spline holder (2), and a hydraulic press.





2. Assemble the pinion shaft (5), spacer (3), and bearing (2) into the housing/cage (4).





3. Press the bearing onto the pinion shaft using the 42170 - installer (1), the DT-48007 - spline holder (2), and a hydraulic press.





Caution:
Refer to Fastener Caution Fastener Caution.

4. Install the nut onto the pinion shaft using a torque wrench, the J 42172 - installer (1), and the DT-48007 - spline holder (2). Tighten the nut to 500 Nm (370 lb ft).

5. Using a punch, stake the areas of the nut into the notches in the end of the pinion shaft.

6. Measure the rotating torque of the pinion shaft using the DT-48007 - spline holder. A properly assembled pinion shaft and bearings should have a rotating torque of 1.4-2.8 Nm (12-25 lb in).
