Rear Axle Shaft Seal and/or Bearing Replacement

* J 8092 Universal Driver Handle-3/4 in - 10
* J 21128 Axle Pinion Oil Seal Installer (8.6 inch and 9.75 inch)
* J 23690 Axle Shaft Bearing Installer (8.6 inch and 9.75 inch)
* J 2619-01 Slide Hammer
* J 29709 Wheel Bearing Installer (9.75 inch Axle)
* J 29712 Wheel Bearing Remover (9.75 inch Axle)
* J 29713 Axle Seal Installer (9.75 inch Axle)
* J 44685 Rear Axle Seal and Bearing Remover (8.6 inch and 9.75 inch Axle)



Removal Procedure

1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (Service and Repair) .
3. Remove the rear axle housing cover. Refer to Rear Axle Housing Cover and Gasket Replacement (8.6 Inch Axle) (Rear Axle Housing Cover and Gasket Replacement (8.6 Inch Axle))Rear Axle Housing Cover and Gasket Replacement (9.75, 10.5 and 10.75 Inch Axles) (Rear Axle Housing Cover and Gasket Replacement (9.75, 10.5 and 10.75 Inch Axles)) .
4. Remove the axle shaft. Refer to Rear Axle Shaft Replacement (8.6, 9.75 Inch Axle WO/RPO JL4) (Service and Repair)Rear Axle Shaft Replacement (8.6 Inch Axle W/RPO JL4) (Service and Repair)Rear Axle Shaft Replacement (9.75 Inch Axle W/RPO JL4) (Service and Repair) .




5. If servicing the 8.6 inch axle, use the J 44685 (1) and the J 2619-01 (2) to remove the axle shaft seal and the bearing from the axle housing.




6. If servicing the 9.75 inch axle, use the J 29712 to remove the axle shaft seal and the bearing from the axle housing.



Installation Procedure






Important: In steps 1 and 2, drive the axle shaft bearing into the axle housing until the tool bottoms against the axle tube.


1. If servicing the 8.6 inch axle, use the J 23690 (1) and the J 8092 (2) to install the axle shaft bearing.
2. If servicing the 9.75 inch axle, use the J 29709 (1) and the J 8092 (2) to install the axle shaft bearing.





Important: Drive the tool into the bore until the axle shaft seal bottoms flush with the axle tube.


3. If servicing the 8.6 axle, use the J 21128 to install the axle shaft seal.
4. If servicing the 9.75 inch axle, use the J 29713 to install the axle shaft seal.
5. Install the axle shaft. Refer to Rear Axle Shaft Replacement (8.6, 9.75 Inch Axle WO/RPO JL4) (Service and Repair)Rear Axle Shaft Replacement (8.6 Inch Axle W/RPO JL4) (Service and Repair)Rear Axle Shaft Replacement (9.75 Inch Axle W/RPO JL4) (Service and Repair)
6. Install the rear axle housing cover. Refer to Rear Axle Housing Cover and Gasket Replacement (8.6 Inch Axle) (Rear Axle Housing Cover and Gasket Replacement (8.6 Inch Axle))Rear Axle Housing Cover and Gasket Replacement (9.75, 10.5 and 10.75 Inch Axles) (Rear Axle Housing Cover and Gasket Replacement (9.75, 10.5 and 10.75 Inch Axles)) .
7. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (Service and Repair) .
8. Fill the rear axle. Refer to Rear Axle Lubricant Replacement (8.6 Inch Axle) (Rear Axle Lubricant Replacement (8.6 Inch Axle))Rear Axle Lubricant Replacement (9.75, 10.5 and 10.75 Inch Axles) (Rear Axle Lubricant Replacement (9.75, 10.5 and 10.75 Inch Axles)) .
9. Remove the support and lower the vehicle.
