Engine Cranks But Will Not Run:

Chart A1-3: Engine Cranks But Will Not Run:

Circuit Description:
When the ignition switch is turned to the "ON" or "START" positions, voltage is applied to the ignition coil and igniter. When the igniter receives an ignition signal from the engine control module (ECM), it toggles the primary coil windings of the ignition coil ON and OFF. By toggling these windings ON and OFF, a high voltage is produced in the secondary coil windings. The high voltage induced is forced to find a ground path through the distributor cap and each secondary spark plug wire to each spark plug.

Test Description:
Number(s) below refer to circled number(s) on the diagnostic chart.

1. This checks for spark at the distributor cap.

2. This checks for faulty spark plug wires or for a misadjusted signal rotor air gap.

Diagnostic Aids:
Water or foreign material in the fuel can cause a no start or lack of power condition. Low fuel pressure, a restricted fuel filter or fuel injectors may also cause a no start condition. Refer to chart A1-5 for fuel injector circuit test.

An intermittent may be caused by a poor connection, rubbed through wire insulation, or a wire broken inside the insulation. Inspect harness connectors for backed out terminals, improper mating, broken locks, improperly formed or damaged terminals and poor terminal-to-wire connections before component replacement.
