Automatic Transmission Removal
Special Tools Required
- Engine Support Hanger, A and Reds AAR-T1256
- Engine Hanger Balance Bar VSB02C000019
- Engine Hanger Adapter Set VSB02C000024
- Front Subframe Adapter EQS02BMDXSB0
- 2008 V6 Attachment Arm SIL02C000033
*: Available through the Honda Tool and Equipment Program 888-424-6857.
NOTE:
- Use fender covers to avoid damaging painted surfaces.
- Special tool Reds engine support hanger AAR-T1256 must be used with the side engine mount installed.
1. Secure the hood in the wide open position with the support rod.
2. Set the wheels in the straight ahead position, and lock the steering wheel.
3. Drain the power steering fluid from the reservoir Service and Repair.
4. Make sure the ignition switch is LOCK (0). Do the battery removal procedure Removal and Replacement, then remove the battery tray.
5. Remove the engine cover and the air intake duct.
6. Remove the air cleaner Service and Repair.
7. Remove the air intake duct A and B Service and Repair.
8. Remove the battery base and the battery base bracket.
9. Remove the front bulkhead cover Front Bulkhead Cover Replacement.
10. Raise the vehicle on a lift, and make sure it is supported securely Service and Repair.
11. Remove the front wheels.
12. Remove the front splash shield Front Splash Shield Replacement.
13. Remove the drain plug (A), and drain the automatic transmission fluid (ATF).
14. Reinstall the drain plug with a new sealing washer (B).
15. Disconnect the steering joint Steering Column Removal/Installation.
16. Remove the power steering pump outlet line (A) from the power steering pump, and remove the hose clamp bolt (B).
17. Disconnect the transmission breather hose (A) from the breather pipe (B) at the transmission housing.
18. Remove the dipstick (A) and the radiator hose bracket (B), then remove the harness clamp (C).
19. Disconnect the positive starter cable (D) and the S terminal connector (E).
20. Remove the two bolts holding the starter, then remove the starter and the gasket.
21. Remove the spring clip (A) and the control pin (B), then separate the shift cable end (C) from the selector control lever (D).
22. Remove the nuts securing the shift cable bracket (E).
23. Check the bushing (F) in the shift cable end for proper fit and wear. If the bushing is loose or worn replace the shift cable Service and Repair.
24. Remove the bolt securing the harness cover (A).
25. Disconnect the 4th clutch transmission fluid pressure switch connector (B), then remove the harness cover from the harness bracket (C).
26. Disconnect A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve A connector (D) and A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve B connector (E).
27. Disconnect A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve C connector (A).
28. Remove the bolts securing the harness cover (B) and harness cover bracket (C), then remove the harness cover bracket from the harness cover.
29. Disconnect the transmission range switch connector (A), and remove the harness clamp (B) from the clamp bracket (C).
30. Remove the transmission ground cable (D).
31. Disconnect the transmission fluid pressure switch A (2nd clutch) connector.
32. Disconnect the ATF cooler hoses (A) from the ATF cooler lines (B). Turn the ends of the cooler hoses up to prevent ATF from flowing out, then plug the cooler hoses and lines.
33. Check for any signs of leakage at the hose joints.
34. Disconnect the input shaft (mainshaft) speed sensor connector (A), the output shaft (countershaft) speed sensor connector (B), the ATF temperature sensor connector (C), and the transmission fluid pressure switch B (3rd clutch) connector (D).
35. Remove the transfer breather (A) from the throttle cable bracket (B).
36. Remove the connector bracket (A) from the engine front cylinder head; use the bracket bolt hole to attach the engine hanger balancer bar front arm.
37. Remove the harness clamp bracket (A) from the rear cylinder head; use the bracket bolt hole to attach the 2008 V6 attachment arm (SIL02C000033).
38. Remove the service caps (A) for the front damper flange nuts from the cowl cover (B). Position the engine hanger adapters (VSB02C000024) with the "FRONT" mark facing forward over the damper flange nuts.
39. Install the engine hanger balance bar (VSB02C000019). Attach the front arm (A) to the front cylinder head with a spacer (B) and a 10 x 1.25 mm bolt (C). Remove the rear arm from the balance bar, then install the 2008 V6 attachment arm (SIL02C000033). Attach the 2008 V6 attachment arm to the rear cylinder head with an 8 x 1.25 mm bolt (D).
40. Install the engine support hanger (AAR-T1256) onto the vehicle as shown, and attach the hook to the slotted hole in the engine hanger balance bar. Tighten the wing nut (E) by hand, and to lift and support the engine.
NOTE: Be careful when working around the windshield.
41. Remove the front mount stop (A) and front mount bolt (B).
42. Remove the front subframe stiffener (A).
43. Remove exhaust pipe A and its mount (B).
44. Remove the cotter pins (A) and nuts (B), and separate the tie-rod end ball joints (C) from the knuckles Service and Repair.
45. Insert a 6 mm Allen wrench (D) in the top of the ball joint pins (E), and remove the nuts (F), then separate the stabilizer links (G).
46. Remove the lock pins (H) and the castle nuts (I), and separate the lower arms (J) from the knuckles (K) Service and Repair.
47. Remove the bolt securing the transfer breather hose bracket (A), and disconnect the breather hose (B) from the breather pipe (C) on the transfer assembly. Cap the breather pipe to prevent fluid from leaking out.
48. Make a reference mark (A) across the propeller shaft (B) and the transfer companion flange (C).
49. Separate the propeller shaft from the transfer companion flange.
50. Remove the transfer assembly (A) from the transmission.
51. Remove the torque converter cover (A), and remove the drive plate bolts (B) (8) while rotating the crankshaft pulley.
52. Disconnect the power steering pressure switch connector.
53. Remove the power steering fluid hose (A) from the hose clamp (B) at the right front of the subframe.
54. Loosen the hose clamp bolt, then disconnect the power steering fluid hose from the fluid line (C).
55. Remove the four transmission lower mount nuts (A).
56. Remove the three rear mount bracket bolts (A).
57. Loosen the four bolts (A) holding the adjustable arms (B) of the front subframe adapter (EQS02BMDXSB0) to its center plate.
NOTE: The adapter is designed to be used the Honda transmission jack (model number LSL-W93714) or powertrain lift (model number OTC-1585), both available through the Honda Tool and Equipment Program. It will also work with most commercially available transmission jacks.
58. Line up the slots in the arms with the bolt holes on the corner of the jack base, then attach the adapter (EQS02BMDXB0) to the jack base with the bolts (A) that came with the jack. Tighten the bolts securely.
59. Raise the jack to the vehicle height, then attach the adapter to the front subframe using the subframe stiffener mounting bolts (B) and bolt holes.
60. Remove both bolt retainers (A) securing the rear mounting bolts (B) of the front subframe (C).
61. Remove the six bolts securing the stiffeners (A) and the four bolts securing the front subframe (B), and lower the front subframe.
NOTE: Check that the front subframe is free of the vacuum hose, the ATF cooler hoses, and electrical wiring.
62. Remove the transmission lower mounts.
63. Remove the left side driveshaft from the differential and the right side driveshaft from the intermediate shaft. Coat all precision machined surfaces with clean engine oil, then put plastic bags over the driveshaft ends. Secure the driveshafts to the body with a strap.
64. Remove the rear warm up three way catalytic converter (WU-TWC) bracket (A) and the heat shield (B).
65. Remove the intermediate shaft (C). Coat all precision machined surfaces with clean engine oil, then put plastic bags over the intermediate shaft ends.
NOTE: Plug the intermediate shaft hole (D) to prevent dirt and solvent from entering the transmission.
66. Remove the transmission housing mounting bolts.
67. Remove the A/F sensor harness clamp bracket (A) from the front engine mount bracket (B), and remove the mount bracket.
68. Place a jack under the transmission.
69. Remove the transmission housing mounting bolts.
70. Remove the front transmission housing mounting bolt (A) using a socket 22 mm long.
71. Remove the front transmission housing mounting bolt (B).
72. Remove the transmission housing mounting bolts.
73. Lower the transmission by loosening the wing nut of the engine support hanger, and tilt the engine just enough for the transmission end to clear the side frame.
74. Slide the transmission away from the engine to remove it from the vehicle.
75. Remove the torque converter, the O-ring, and the dowel pins.
76. Inspect the drive plate, and replace if it is damaged Service and Repair.
