Automatic Transmission Installation
Special Tools Required
- Engine Hanger Adapter VSB02C000015
- Engine Support Hanger, A and Reds AAR-T1256
- Subframe Adapter VSB02C000016
*: Available through the Honda Tool and Equipment Program 888-424-6857.
NOTE: Use fender covers to avoid damaging painted surfaces.
1. Install a new O-ring (A) on the torque converter (B), then install the torque converter on the mainshaft (C).
NOTE: Make sure the torque converter is fully engaged on the mainshaft, the stator shaft, and the ATF pump drive gear. Failure to do so will result in severe transmission or engine damage.
2. Install the 14 x 20 mm dowel pins (D) in the torque converter housing.
3. Place the transmission on a transmission jack, and raise the transmission to the engine level, then fit the transmission to the engine.
4. Install the rear transmission housing mounting bolts.
NOTE: Be careful not to damage the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor and the sensor harness.
5. Install the CKP sensor cover.
6. Install the front and lower transmission housing mounting bolts.
7. Install the front engine mount bracket with new bolts.
8. Install the rear engine mount bracket with new bolts.
9. Install a new set ring (A) on the intermediate shaft (B).
10. Clean the areas where the intermediate shaft contacts the transmission (differential) with solvent, and dry with compressed air. Apply ATF to the intermediate shaft splines (C), then install the intermediate shaft. Be sure not to allow dust or other foreign particles to enter the transmission.
NOTE: Do not wash the rubber parts with solvent.
11. Install a new set ring (A) on the left driveshaft (B).
12. Clean the areas where the left driveshaft contacts the transmission (differential) with solvent, and dry with compressed air. Then install the left driveshaft. Be sure not to allow dust or other foreign particles to enter the transmission. Turn the steering knuckle fully outward, and slide the driveshaft into the differential until you feel the set ring fully engage the side gear.
NOTE: Do not wash the rubber parts with solvent.
13. Apply the recommended grease to the right driveshaft inboard joint splines. Slide the right driveshaft over the intermediate shaft splines until you feel the driveshaft fully engage the intermediate shaft set ring.
14. Install the lower transmission mount with new bolts.
15. Remove the transmission jack.
16. Support the front subframe (A) with the subframe adapter (VSB02C000016) and the transmission jack, raise the front subframe up to the body.
NOTE: Be careful when connecting these items:
- Front engine mount and its bracket
- Lower transmission mount and front subframe
- Knuckle ball joints and lower arms
17. Loosely install the front subframe and the stiffeners (B) with new front subframe mounting bolts (four) (C), the front stiffener bolts (two) (D), and new rear stiffener bolts (two) (E).
18. Align the front subframe with the subframe alignment pin Service and Repair.
19. Remove the transmission jack and the subframe adapter.
20. Discard the front subframe middle rubber mount bolts (A), then tighten new bolts to the specified torque, on both sides.
21. Install the lower transmission mount nuts.
22. Apply molybdenum grease to the hole in the bushing (A) in the shift cable end (B). Install the shift cable bracket (C).
23. Attach the shift cable end to the selector control lever (D), then insert the control pin (E) into the control lever hole through the shift cable end, then secure the control pin with the spring clip (F).
NOTE: Do not bend the shift cable excessively.
24. Install the shift cable cover (G).
25. Attach the torque converter to the drive plate with the eight bolts (A). Rotate the crankshaft pulley as necessary to tighten the bolts to half of the specified torque, then to the final torque, in a crisscross pattern. After tightening the last bolt, check that the crankshaft rotates freely.
26. Install the torque converter cover (B).
27. Install exhaust pipe A Service and Repair.
28. Connect the knuckle ball joint (A) on the lower arm (B) on both sides.
NOTE: Wipe off any grease contamination from the ball joint tapered section and threads.
29. Install a new damper fork mounting bolt (C) and nut (D) on both sides, and loosely tighten the nuts.
30. Tighten the castle nut (E) on both sides to the lowest torque specification, then tighten it only far enough to align the slot with the ball joint pin hole. Do not align the castle nut by loosening it.
NOTE: Insert a new cotter pin (F) into the ball joint pin hole from the front to the rear of the vehicle, and bend its end as shown. Check the ball joint pin hole direction before connecting the ball joint.
31. Connect the tie-rod end ball joint (A) to the knuckle (B) on both sides.
NOTE: Wipe off any grease contamination from the ball joint tapered section and threads.
32. Install a new nut (C) on both sides, then tighten it to the specified torque.
33. Install a new cotter pin (D) on both sides, then bend it as shown.
34. Connect the PSP switch connector (A).
35. Connect the power steering fluid hose (A), then secure the hose with the clamp (B).
36. Install the engine under cover Engine Undercover Replacement.
37. Lower the vehicle on the lift, and support the engine/transmission with a jack.
38. Loosely install the upper transmission mount bracket (A) with new bolts (B).
39. Loosely install the rear engine mount (A) to the rear engine mount bracket (B) with a new bolt (C).
40. Loosely install the front engine mount (A) to the front engine mount bracket (B) with a new bolt (C).
41. Install the front engine mount stop (D) with new nuts (E), then connect the vacuum hose (F).
42. Remove the engine support hanger.
43. Tighten the upper transmission mount bolts to 59 Nm (6.0 kg-m, 44 lb-ft).
44. Tighten the rear engine mount bolt to 79 Nm (8.1 kg-m, 58 lb-ft).
45. Tighten the front engine mount bolt to 54 Nm (5.5 kg-m, 40 lb-ft).
46. Remove the engine hanger adapter (VSB02C000015) from the cylinder head.
47. Install the upper transmission housing mounting bolts.
48. Connect the power steering pump outlet line (A) with a new O-ring (B).
49. Install the power steering hose bracket (C).
50. Connect these connectors:
- Transmission fluid pressure switch B (3rd clutch) connector (A)
- A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve B connector (B)
- A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve C connector (C)
- Shift solenoid wire harness connector (D)
51. Install the harness clamps (E).
52. Connect these connectors:
- Input shaft (mainshaft) speed sensor connector (A)
- Output shaft (countershaft) speed sensor connector (B)
- Transmission range switch subharness connector (C)
53. Install the transmission range switch subharness connector (D).
54. Install the ATF warmer/filter assembly.
NOTE: Be careful not to damage the pipes and fin part of the ATF warmer when installing it.
55. Install the A/F sensor connector (A).
56. Install the harness cover bracket (B), and install the harness cover clamps (C).
57. Connect the ATF hoses (A) to the ATF inlet line (B) and the ATF warmer (C), then secure the hoses with the clip ATF Warmer Hose Replacement.
58. Connect the ATF hose (A) to the ATF filter (B), then secure the hose with the clip ATF Warmer Hose Replacement.
59. Connect these connectors:
- A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve A connector (A)
- Transmission fluid pressure switch A (2nd clutch) connector (B)
60. Install the harness clamps (C).
61. Align the reference marks (A) on the steering joint and the steering gearbox pinion shaft. Connect the steering joint (B) to the steering gearbox pinion shaft (C). Loosely install the steering joint bolts.
62. Remove the steering wheel holder tool, then tighten the steering joint bolts.
63. Install the steering joint cover (D).
64. Install the under-hood fuse/relay box.
65. Install the strut brace Frame Brace Replacement.
66. Refill the transmission with ATF ATF Replacement.
67. Install the water separator.
68. Install the battery base.
69. Install the intake air duct.
70. Install the air cleaner Service and Repair.
71. Install the front grille cover Front Grille Cover Replacement.
72. Refill the reservoir with power steering fluid.
73. Reinstall the driver's side hood support strut bracket (A) with the bolts to the proper locations.
74. Reattach the passenger's side hood support strut on the pivot bolt.
75. Do the battery installation procedure Removal and Replacement.
76. Do the power steering system bleeding procedure Testing and Inspection.
77. Place a jack under the lower arm, and raise the front suspension to load it with the vehicle's weight. Do not place the jack against the ball joint pin of the knuckle. Tighten the damper fork mounting nut while holding the mounting bolt to 64 Nm (6.5 kg-m, 47 lb-ft), on both sides.
78. Set the parking brake. Start the engine, and shift the transmission through all gears three times. Check the shift lever operation, the A/T gear position indicator operation, and the shift cable adjustment.
79. Install the front wheels.
80. Check and adjust the front wheel alignment Service and Repair.
81. Start the engine with the shift lever in P or N, and warm it up to normal operating temperature (the radiator fan comes on).
82. Turn the engine off, and check the ATF level Procedures.
83. Do the road test A/T Road Test.
