Automatic Transmission Removal
Special Tools Required
- Engine Hanger Adapter VSB02C000015
- Engine Support Hanger, A and Reds AAR-T1256
- Subframe Adapter VSB02C000016
*: Available through the Honda Tool and Equipment Program 888-424-6857.
NOTE:
- Use fender covers to avoid damaging painted surfaces.
- Special tool Reds engine support hanger AAR-T1256 must be used with the side engine mount installed.
1. Do the battery removal procedure Removal and Replacement.
2. Remove the front grille cover Front Grille Cover Replacement.
3. Pry the passenger's side hood support strut clip, and release the passenger's side hood support strut from the pivot bolt Service and Repair.
4. Remove the driver's side hood support strut bracket (A), then use it as shown to prop the hood in the wide-open position.
NOTE:
- Turn the hood support strut bracket inside out.
- Do not attempt to close the hood with the support strut in the vertical position, as it will damage the support strut and the rod.
5. Remove the strut brace Frame Brace Replacement.
6. Drain the power steering fluid.
7. Remove the intake air duct.
8. Remove the air cleaner Service and Repair.
9. Remove the battery base.
10. Remove the water separator.
11. Remove the nut securing the under-hood fuse/relay box, then swing it out of the way.
12. Remove the steering joint cover (A).
13. Make reference marks (B) across the steering joint (C) and the steering gearbox pinion shaft (D). Loosen the steering joint bolts (E), (F), then install the steering wheel holder tool.
14. Remove the steering joint bolt (E), then disconnect the steering joint from the steering gearbox pinion shaft.
15. Disconnect these connectors:
- A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve A connector (A)
- Transmission fluid pressure switch A (2nd clutch) connector (B)
16. Remove the harness clamps (C).
17. Disconnect the ATF hoses (A) from the ATF inlet line (B) and the ATF warmer (C). Turn the ends of the ATF hoses up to prevent ATF from flowing out, then plug the ATF hoses and the lines.
18. Disconnect the ATF hose (A) from the ATF filter (B). Turn the end of the ATF hose up to prevent ATF from flowing out, then plug the ATF hose and the line.
19. Remove the A/F sensor connector (A).
20. Remove the harness cover clamps (B), then remove the harness cover bracket (C).
21. Remove the bolts (A) securing the ATF warmer bracket (B), then move the ATF warmer/filter assembly out of the way.
NOTE: Be careful not to damage the pipes and fin part of the ATF warmer when moving it.
22. Remove the transmission range switch subharness connector (A).
23. Disconnect these connectors:
- Transmission range switch subharness connector (B)
- Input shaft (mainshaft) speed sensor connector (C)
- Output shaft (countershaft) speed sensor connector (D)
24. Disconnect these connectors:
- Transmission fluid pressure switch B (3rd clutch) connector (A)
- A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve B connector (B)
- A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve C connector (C)
- Shift solenoid wire harness connector (D)
25. Remove the harness clamps (E).
26. Disconnect the power steering pump outlet line (A) with the O-ring (B).
27. Remove the power steering hose bracket (C).
28. Remove the upper transmission housing mounting bolts.
29. Attach the engine hanger adapter (VSB02C000015) to the threaded hole located on the rear side of the cylinder head.
30. Install the engine support hanger (AAR-T1256) onto the vehicle as shown, and attach the hook to the slotted hole in the engine hanger adapter. Tighten the wing nut (A) by hand, and lift and support the engine.
NOTE:
- Be careful when working around the windshield.
- Be careful not to damage the hood opener cable when installing the engine support hanger at the front bulkhead.
31. Remove the rear engine mount bolt (A).
32. Disconnect the vacuum hose (A).
33. Remove the front engine mount stop (B), then remove the front engine mount bolt (C).
34. Remove the upper transmission mount bracket bolts (A).
NOTE: Do not remove the TORX bolt (B) from the upper transmission mount. If the TORX bolt is removed, the upper transmission mount must be replaced as an assembly.
35. Raise the vehicle on a lift, and make sure it is securely supported.
36. Remove the front wheels.
37. Remove the engine under cover Engine Undercover Replacement.
38. Remove the drain plug (A), and drain the ATF.
39. Reinstall the drain plug with a new sealing washer (B).
40. Disconnect the power steering fluid hose (A). Turn the end of the hose up to prevent power steering fluid from flowing out, then plug the hose and line.
41. Remove exhaust pipe A Service and Repair.
42. Disconnect the PSP switch connector (A).
43. Remove the cotter pin (A) and the nut (B) from the tie-rod end ball joint (C) on both sides.
44. Separate the tie-rod end ball joint from the knuckle on both sides.
45. Remove the cotter pin (A) and the castle nut (B) from the knuckle ball joint (C) on both sides.
46. Remove the damper fork mounting nut (D) while holding the mounting bolt (E). Remove the mounting bolt, then separate the knuckle ball joint from the lower arm on both sides.
47. Remove the torque converter cover (A), then remove the eight bolts (B) while rotating the crankshaft pulley.
48. Remove the shift cable cover (A).
49. Remove the spring clip (B) and the control pin (C), then separate the shift cable end (D) from the selector control lever (E). Remove the shift cable bracket (F).
50. Support the shift cable to the body with a nylon strap.
NOTE: Do not bend the shift cable excessively.
51. Remove the lower transmission mount nuts.
52. Loosen the front subframe middle mount rubber bolts on both sides.
53. Attach the subframe adapter (VSB02C000016) to the front subframe by looping the strap (A) over the front of the front subframe, then secure the strap with the stop (B), then tighten the wing nut (C).
54. Raise a transmission jack and line up the slots in the subframe adapter arms with the bolt holes on the corner of the transmission jack base, then tighten the bolts.
55. Remove the front subframe mounting bolts (A), the front stiffener bolts (B), and the rear stiffener bolts (C), then lower the front subframe (D).
NOTE: Check that the front subframe is free of the hoses and the electrical wiring.
56. Place the transmission jack under the transmission.
57. Remove the lower transmission mount.
58. Remove the left side driveshaft from the differential and the right side driveshaft from the intermediate shaft. Coat all precision machined surfaces with clean engine oil, then put plastic bags over the driveshaft ends. Support the driveshaft on both sides with nylon straps.
59. Remove the intermediate shaft. Coat all precision machined surfaces with clean engine oil, then put plastic bags over the intermediate shaft ends.
60. Remove the rear engine mount bracket.
61. Remove the front engine mount bracket.
62. Lower the transmission by loosening the wing nut on the engine support hanger, and tilt the engine just enough for the transmission to clear the side frame. Check that the transmission is completely free of the ATF hoses, the vacuum hoses, and the electrical wiring.
63. Remove the front and lower transmission housing mounting bolts.
64. Remove the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor cover.
65. Remove the rear transmission housing mounting bolts.
NOTE: Be careful not to damage the CKP sensor and the sensor harness.
66. Check once again that the transmission is free of the vacuum hoses, the ATF hoses, and the electrical wiring.
67. Slide the transmission away from the engine to remove it from the vehicle.
68. Remove the torque converter (A), the O-ring (B), and the dowel pins (C).
69. Inspect the drive plate, and replace it if it is damaged.
