Camshaft: Service and Repair

Fig.15 Upper Timing Chain Tensioner Removal:




1. Remove distributor cap and electrical connectors.
2. Remove cam cover, then rotate engine until No. 1 cylinder is at TDC.
3. Remove distributor, then push off lock tabs from camshaft sprocket securing bolts. Loosen bolts and tab washers.
4. Remove upper chain tensioner valve clamp bolt, then the clamp and valve (1, 2, 3), Fig. 15.
5. Using a 3 mm allen wrench, turn tensioner until snail engages in park position. Remove tensioner housing securing bolt (4), Fig.15 .
6. Remove tensioner assembly.
7. Remove camshaft sprocket securing bolts/tab washers, then the sprocket.

8. Remove cylinder head bolt from No. 2 cap. (1), Fig. 16, then loosen securing bolts from No. 2 cap, and remove bearing cap from camshaft.
9. Install spacer tool No. 18G-1435, or equivalent, to head (2), Fig.16 .
10. Install and tighten cylinder head bolt to specifications.
11. Repeat steps 8 through 10 for Nos. 3, 4, 5 and 6 caps.
12. Remove cylinder head bolt from No. 7 cap, then alternately remove securing bolts from Nos. 1 and 7 caps, until camshaft is free.
13. Lift camshaft from head and install spacer tool No. 18G-1435, or equivalent, to No. 7 cylinder head bolt and tighten to specifications.

Installation
1. Install camshaft at TDC.
2. Lubricate bearing caps before installing.
3. Install No. 1 cap, but do not tighten.
4. Remove No. 7 cap cylinder head bolt and remove spacer tool.
5. Install No. 7 cap, but do not tighten.
6. Tighten Nos. 1 and 7 caps in sequence, to specifications.
7. Remove No. 4 cap cylinder head bolt and remove spacer.
8. Install and tighten No. 4 cap bolt to specification.
9. Install and tighten No. 4 cap cylinder head bolt to specification.
10. Repeat steps 8 and 9 for Nos. 2, 3, 5 and 6 caps.
11. Set camshaft to TDC.
12. Check valve clearances.
