Steering Gear (w/o VGRS)

POWER STEERING: STEERING GEAR (w/o VGRS): INSPECTION

INSPECTION

1. INSPECT TOTAL PRELOAD
(a) Temporarily install the left and right steering rack ends to prevent steering rack overstroke.

(b) Using SST and a torque wrench, inspect the preload.
SST: 09616-00011
Preload (turning):
1.5 to 2.5 N*m (15.3 to 25.5 kgf*cm, 13.3 to 22.1 in.*lbf)
If the turning torque is not as specified range, replace the power steering link assembly.
2. INSPECT TIE ROD ASSEMBLY LH
(a) Secure the tie rod LH in a vise.
(b) Install the nut to the stud bolt.
(c) Flip the ball joint back and forth 5 times or more.

(d) Using a torque wrench, turn the nut continuously at a rate of 3 to 5 seconds per turn and take the torque reading on the 5th turn.
Turning torque:
0.49 to 3.43 N*m (5.0 to 35 kgf*cm, 4.3 to 30.4 in.*lbf)
If the turning torque is not as specified, replace the tie rod assembly LH.
3. INSPECT TIE ROD ASSEMBLY RH
HINT: Use the same procedures described for the LH side.
