Front Disc Brake Pads Replacement (GXP)
Front Disc Brake Pads Replacement (GXP)
Removal Procedure
Tools Required
J 23738-A Hand Vacuum Pump
1. Inspect the brake fluid level in the brake master cylinder reservoir.
Caution: Refer to Brake Fluid Effects on Paint and Electrical Components Caution (Brake Fluid Effects on Paint and Electrical Components Caution)
Warning: Refer to Brake Fluid Irritant Warning (Brake Fluid Irritant Warning).
Note: Do not completely empty the brake master cylinder reservoir. Failure to comply will require a complete bleeding of the braking system.
Note: The brake fluid level must be midway between the maximum brake fluid level marking and the minimum brake fluid level marking.
2. If required, use J 23738-A to remove some brake fluid until the brake fluid level is midway between the maximum brake fluid level marking and the minimum brake fluid level marking.
Danger: To avoid any vehicle damage, serious personal injury or death when major components are removed from the vehicle and the vehicle is supported by a hoist, support the vehicle with jack stands at the opposite end from which the components are being removed and strap the vehicle to the hoist.
Warning: Refer to Safety Glasses Warning (Safety Glasses Warning).
3. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle (Service and Repair).
4. Remove the front wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (Service and Repair).
5. Install 2 opposite wheel nuts (1), with the flat side of the wheel nut against the brake rotor to retain the brake rotor to the wheel hub.
Warning: Refer to Brake Dust Warning (Brake Dust Warning)
6. Using a suitable hammer and punch, tap the lower brake caliper guide pin (3) from the outside of the brake caliper to release the lower brake caliper guide pin (3) from the brake caliper (4).
7. Apply suitable pressure to the lower end of the brake pad retainer (1).
8. Remove the lower brake caliper guide pin (3) from the brake caliper (4).
9. Remove the brake pad retainer (1) from the upper brake caliper guide pin (2).
10. Using a suitable hammer and punch, tap the upper brake caliper guide pin (2) from the outside of the brake caliper to release the upper brake caliper guide pin (2) from the brake caliper (3).
11. Install an OTC 7034 disc brake pad spreader or equivalent to the brake caliper.
12. Using the OTC 7034 disc brake pad spreader or equivalent spread the brake pads until the brake caliper pistons are fully bottomed.
13. Remove the brake pads (1) from the brake caliper (3).
Installation Procedure
1. Clean the brake caliper pistons to brake pad contact faces
2. Replace the brake caliper dust boot seals if the brake caliper dust boot seals are damaged. Refer to Front Brake Caliper Overhaul (Base and GT) (Front Brake Caliper Overhaul (Base and GT))Front Brake Caliper Overhaul (GXP) (Front Brake Caliper Overhaul (GXP)).
3. Replace the brake caliper guide pin (2) if the brake caliper guide pin (2) is damaged or corroded.
Note: Observe the orientation of the brake pads.
Note: Align the brake pad guide pin holes with the brake caliper guide pin holes.
4. Install the brake pads (1) to the brake caliper (3).
5. Install the upper brake caliper guide pin (2) to the brake caliper (3).
6. Using a suitable hammer and punch, tap the upper brake caliper guide pin (2) from the inside of the brake caliper to secure the upper brake caliper guide pin (2) to the brake caliper (3).
7. Install the brake pad retainer (1) under the upper brake caliper guide pin (2).
8. Apply suitable pressure to the lower end of the brake pad retainer (1).
9. Install the lower brake caliper guide pin (3) to the brake caliper (4).
10. Using a suitable hammer and punch, tap the lower brake caliper guide pin (3) from the inside of the brake caliper to secure the lower brake caliper guide pin (3) to the brake caliper (4).
11. Make sure that the brake pad retainer (1) is correctly seated and retaining both brake pads.
12. Remove the 2 opposite wheel nuts (1) from the wheel studs.
13. Install the front wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (Service and Repair).
14. Lower the vehicle.
15. Seat the brake caliper pistons and brake pads by applying the brake pedal approximately 2/3 of its travel distance and slowly releasing the brake pedal. Perform this procedure a few times until the brake pedal application becomes firm.
16. Use NEW DOT 4 or NEW Super DOT 4 brake fluid from a clean, sealed brake fluid container and fill the brake master cylinder reservoir to the maximum brake fluid level marking. Refer to Master Cylinder Reservoir Filling (Master Cylinder Reservoir Filling).
17. Lower the vehicle to the ground.
18. Burnish the pads and rotors. Refer to Brake Pad and Rotor Burnishing (Brake Pad and Rotor Burnishing).
